Local press have reported that two striking GMB members were injured by cars driving through picket lines and the Jacobs factory in Aintree, where workers who make the famous Cream Crackers, Jaffa Cakes, Twiglets, Club bars and Mini Cheddars are striking over a real-terms pay cut.

A tweet by GMB official Lisa Ryan noted two injuries and said that the workers have ‘no confidence in manager[‘s] ability to control his staff’:

But Skwawkbox can reveal that GMB activists claim that cars struck at staff on at least three separate occasions – and were driven by ‘bosses’, specifically members of ‘senior management’ at the company.

Skwawkbox informed Pladis Global, the company that owns Jacobs, of the workers’ allegations and asked:

  • whether the company would confirm or deny the allegations
  • whether any action had been taken by the company against the employee or employees driving the car
  • to provide any further comment the company wished to make in light of the allegations, in view of its initial comment to local media that safety and wellbeing is its ‘number one priority’

Pladis did not address the questions or the number of incidents directly, or confirm or deny whether the cars were driven by senior management, but a spokesperson said:

We are aware of an incident that took place on the picket line on Sunday evening. The safety and wellbeing of all on site is our top priority and we have assisted the police with their enquiries.

Skwawkbox understands that Merseyside Police have examined CCTV footage of the incidents and the force’s investigation is still ongoing.
