Union leader’s ominous letter smeared rapper-activist along with former MP and Bristol professor
Last week Skwawkbox revealed the full, ominous letter from GMB union boss Gary Smith to the organisers of the famous Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival, smearing rapper and activist Lowkey along with former MP Chris Williamson and wrongfully-sacked Bristol professor David Miller – and demanding that the festival de-platform Lowkey and provide guarantees about its future vetting-out of critics of Israel to whom right-wing Jewish groups take exception.
Now Lowkey has commented to Skwawkbox on the move to ‘cancel’ him:
It was a great disappointment to be disinvited from the Tolpuddle Martyrs festival, I was greatly looking forward to celebrating those that stood up to establish the right of collective bargaining in our society for many generations to come. It is through that step that so many rights have been won. It is on the shoulders of giants we stand.
However, I was shocked to discover that not only key figures within the Labour party, but also the GMB Union, were lobbying the TUC to blacklist me with talking points that have come directly from Israel lobby groups with material links to illegal settlement building.
The GMB Union membership voted unanimously for BDS [the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign organised by Palestine Solidarity against illegal settlements], why is the General Secretary obtaining talking points to blacklist me from Israel lobby groups? The GMB is a key supporter of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, where I am a patron. Would Gary Smith like to get me blacklisted from my status as patron for the Palestine Solidarity Campaign too?
The real scandal revealed here is that the General Secretary of a key Palestine supporting Union is secretly collaborating with Israel lobby groups to blacklist workers.
The GMB union press office was contacted for comment last week, but did not respond.
