Italian unions score another global first
Giant online retailer Amazon has agreed a deal with Italian unions promising to involve them in the company’s operations in Italy, after a strike earlier this year over the strains placed on delivery drivers. Amazon has fought against allowing unionisation of its workforce and defeated an attempt by US unions to organise last spring.
Amazon Italia signed a ‘framework agreement’ this week to consult with unions on a range of issues. The head of the CGIL union called the deal an ‘important’ recognition of the role of the unions, marking something new, at a world level’.
The agreement is the second global first achieved by Italian unions against Amazon’s resistance. In 2018, the firm conceded a deal on a narrower issue of ‘inhumane’ scheduling. Workers in Canada have also recently begun moves to unionise.

This is excellent news from Italy,and I am hoping the Americans will not be too far behind, because we all know they never like to be in second place on anything. I certainly think this will mean the pressure from the people for Amazon to unionise will be overwhelming and irresistable now, and should result in this happening in the UK also, in the not too distant future. However, we do urgently need good democratic socialist left wing candidates and parties to vote for now.
I just want to add that it looks as though the momentum to turn left, around the world, is now beginning to look and feel unstoppable, thank god. We should never have let disaster neoliberal capitalism be the dominant economics for so long.

Bezos is scum. It’s highly likely that behind ghe PR statements, filthy union leaders have had their palms secretly greased, with workers sold down the river as usual. Where there’s dirty money, there’s always an equal amount of dirty double dealing.
AFAIK Convincing Italian Amazon workers to join a Union took a lot of hard work by the organizers over quite a long time. It took the Covid emergency to show the workers how needed they were and to help them understand they deserved better working conditions and pay. They also realised these benefits could only be achieved through the Union, as the bosses played one individual against the other
Everything that the CPI touches has turned into manure. Whatever the initials, they’ll be in the mix. How I wish that it wasn’t so.
