Watson deletes claim McCluskey pressured over candidates – as Beckett reaches 353 nominations

Media have consistently under-reported Beckett’s performance, but left favourite expected to finish on around 400 nominations

Tom Watson has deleted his retweet of an article claiming that outgoing Unite boss Len McCluskey is ‘under pressure to persuade candidates to step aside’ in the union’s leadership election.

Watson, who participated in a ‘risible’ smear last week against left favourite Howard Beckett, clearly wants Beckett out of the contest at all costs. But Unite activists in Scotland, Ireland and Wales have rebelled against the notion that their favourite candidate should step down in favour of candidates with largely English backing – Beckett has substantial support in England too – so the chances that McCluskey, who in any case has given no indication that he wanted any of the candidates to ‘step aside’, have evaporated.

Watson appears to have wanted to remove the evidence of yet another wrong call.

Meanwhile, despite rivals originally hoping he would struggle to reach the threshold – and persistent under-reporting of Beckett’s performance in the nominations phase of the campaign, the left favourite has now received at least 353 nominations and, with notifications continuing to come in after verification by electoral services provider CES, he is expected to reach around 400 and clearly has the campaign momentum.

    1. I wonder if Watson was one of the “flies” caught “with honey”? He flies quite freely to me. MORE honey?
      🐝🍯🐝🍯🐝🍯

      1. The one the Right attack most, is obviously the correct choice. Howard Beckett is the correct choice. The ONLY choice to save True Labour. As Hodge itself said, the Unite leadership is an important position.
To vote for anyone else would be again dancing to the Right’s destructive tune.
Stop that dance‼️ VOTE HOWARD BECKETT‼️ The survival of an EFFECTIVE “Left” depends on this vote‼️ Don’t abstain. Look at the MSM’s bile. Watch the emergence of Hodge and Watson to attack Howard Beckett.
Their attacks prove that they see him as the one candidate who will defend the “Left”.
Howard Beckett shows that defence in action. Unite members cannot afford to sabotage another opportunity for them in general and the whole country in particular.

    2. lundiel – If you are referring to me then why would I. The fact remains though that regardless of your and others attempts at distraction Steve Turner is way out in front of Howard Beckett on nominations.
We’ll now have to wait and see whether HB stands down.

      1. Nominations and Votes, steveh – there’s a world of difference and the winner will be the candidate that gets most members’ votes.

Point is, Steve Turner’s nomnations are largely the product of bureaucratic decision making. Beckett’s, on the other hand, are mostly unplanned, spontaneous, sometimes impulsive endorse to appreciate HB’s democratic socialism and working class integrity.

      2. qwertboi – We’ll see at the end of August whether you are right (or wrong). Unfortunately I don’t share your faith in Beckett’s so called democratic principles socialist principles.

    1. Please help anyone. Above SH implies the actual vote is not till end August. Is that accurate? If so, then Howard Beckett should campaign with full dynamism until the last day! It is curious that anyone should pressure HB to abandon his run so very early in proceedings. As qwertboi correctly states, nominations are bureaucratic. Bureaucracy is easily corrupted by those in control. The Right Wing are well know for their compulsive underhandedness.

Howard Beckett’s best way to show his mettle is to fight to the end. Yes we should only have one “Left” candidate. The other two have thus far failed miserably to speak up and out. They are therefore unable to inspire and motivate our Socialist drive.

Of course the other candidate endorsed by Sir Rodney Starmer is by definition even more of a non starter… and that takes some doing.

Howard Beckett we need to HEAR you EVERY WHERE and EVERY DAY till voting day!!! Get a move on!!!
      Vite vite 🚀🌹🚀🌹🚀🌹

      1. windchime – “Above SH implies the actual vote is not till end August. Is that accurate?

Don’t be such a drama queen.
I thought everyone was aware of the timetable, obviously not. So for those who haven’t bothered to acquaint themselves with even the basics before pontificating here is the timetable
The election timetable is as follows:

        Election details Dates
        • Nomination period: Thursday 6 May 2021 – 7 June 2021
        • Deadline for Receipt of Nominations: Wednesday 9 June 2021 at noon
        • Voting papers dispatched: From 5 July 2021
        • Deadline for voting papers to be returned to the Independent Scrutineer: 23 August 2021 at noon
        • Declaration of results Thursday 26 August 2021

I trust this will avoid any confusion on your part in the future

      2. SH it’s obvious u like one or two others believe everyone’s life revolves around politics. No! That is certainly a problem on the “Left” i.e. all must know what all know, thereby remaining ignorant of how the general public sees us. It is a surprise that u a committed Right Wing staffer even pretends not to know that. P.s putting ones views with confidence is not pontification. Rather it is putting ones views.

If however u do really believe that a non Unite member should know the administrative details of a Unite election, then enjoy pontificating up yourself. Thanks for the info though 😁😁😁

      3. that should have read – ‘… all must know the little that those of their clique know …”

Ps the result of that is precisely the problems observable by any pair of new eyes and ears; narrow group think… stale parochial conservative poverty of thought. Nothing changes. Nothing is refreshed. As a storm a few months ago in a parish meeting, the intoxicated obsession with process rather than a positive outcome, cripples all organisations which fail.

For success each must play to their strengths. Each should be ENCOURAGED to contribute their perspective rather than try to hide the fact that they need information or help. Thanks again for an opportunity to give this view.
        😊🌹😊🌹😊🌹

      4. windchimes – Maybe not if you were politically apathetic, but you’re not are you. I would have thought someone like yourself, a self proclaimed socialist and activist would have had the intellectual curiosity to at least take a glance at Unite’s website and find out for themselves. It just goes to show how wrong you can be sometimes.

      5. It just shows how limited your view is. I have never “proclaimed” to be an “activist.” The timetable re a Union of which i’ve never been a member, is an administrative detail.
We need not know everything. Basic common sense is to know to get information when needed, eg by asking. You in particular are ALWAYS asking questions of posters here. Why? You have been told many times by many people to “find out” yourself. You prove how duplicitous you Right Wing Tory entryist parasites all are. You are needlessly nasty because that’s your Tory nature.

BUT – your posting the timetable showing that you know the actual vote is over two MONTHS away, proves that your campaign to get Howard Becket to stand aside, is to destroy the “Left”. When you say go Right the rest of us should go “Left”.
        🟢📕🟢🧧🟢🧧

  1. Howard Beckett is not “the left favourite” that honour must go to Steve Turner unite left nominated candidate. Also the Communist party of Britain endorsing Steve Turner is a clear message of whos the left wing favourite.I think Squawkbox are doing a great job in promoting Howard Beckett and I congratulate them on showing loyal friendship, but lets not forget who has the track record for the union Steve Turner.

    1. I sense another ‘Told You So’ coming on. You choose Turner because it says “Communist Party GB” on the tin, as we surely all know by now, for example ‘Labour’ on the Tin, means nothing for its Contents! Joseph is it not blatantly obvious to you, just by looking at who are Creating Hysteria about Beckett? Who of the “Big Names” are looking for every possible way to take Beckett down the same Rosy Path as Corbyn 2015 to 2020!?
The Socialist Party and Socialists who matter are behind Brckett, that is good enough for me, I have ‘literally’ no time for “I am literally a communist” Novara, Jones, LabourList, Momentum, Fake Left! I’m curious what the hell went wrong in Morning Star, I guess they were also taken over by the “I am literally a communist” Posh Kids!
Never Mind! Let the Best man Win, perhaps we will see rivers of tears of post GE19, when no one challenges The Neolabour Tory Party.
Or perhaps we will see none Thanks to Beckett as GS!

      1. Exactly skellynelly. Not rocket silence. Not even primary school science. Blindingly obvious. Re Morningstar article, again u r spot on. Think of it. Draw a Venn Diagram. There is an intersection. The ‘honey fly catchers’ are the ‘choose Clive Lewis to please the media or the Right Wing’, the ‘choose Starmer because he noised about Remain and made promises’, ‘Turner (neither attacked by Hodge, Watson etc and endorsed by SH) will defend the “Left” from Starmer … better than Howard Beckett’, Owen Jones, Toynbee…
They are all the same set of people and attitude who intersect. The same people. Very odd and very sad, people gripped and paralysed by some strange something. Puzzling. How could it be?

Unless it’s some complicated double bluff, the basic fact of Hodge going on the attack is more than enough for Unite members to vote Beckett. But Watson too??? A child could see that. And decent inteligent knowledgable people who were not comatose for the last FIVE YEARS still…
        S T I L L wish to risk ALL our futures with Turner ❓❓❓ I’m mystified. Stumped.

Of course we should have one “Left” candidate and overwhelmingly that one IS Howard Beckett.

        Any other spells danger.

    2. Yep, this contest is exposing yet again the different factions of the UK Left as their own short-sighted, worst enemies ! Different Left groupings support different Left candidates, and their various publications spend more time rubbishing the other Left candidates than they do that creature of Big Business and the Labour Right, Coyne !

Others have already pointed out that the nominations totals do NOT in fact show Beckett as the front runner of the three Left candidates (or bogus ‘polls’ with tiny numbers polled) – despite Skwawkbox constantly mangling facts to suggest this is so. So who stands to gain from a looming three-way split Left vote in a FPTP electoral contest ? Yup, its Coyne and his Big Business and Labour Right puppet masters. The UK Left once again shooting itself in the head for factional purposes , That is why, even if none of the three supposedly ‘Left’ candidates is a new Arthur Scargill (and none of them are – certainly not the Left posturing wealthy ex legal business boss, Howard Beckett, a man with no actual personal record of trades union shopfloor struggle at ALL to weigh against his current Leftie rhetoric), to keep out the ghastly creature, Coyne, the Left should have settled on ONE Left candidate.

If Big Business’s man, Coyne, slips though to victory because of a three-way split Left vote, Steve of Skwawkbox, will share the blame . Gratitude for help, via Beckett, to pay those huge libel case costs, does not justify the uncritical, unprincipled, defaming of other Left candidates, and constant misinformation, ie, the disgraceful role of Skwawkbox over the last months, as Beckett’s personal PR megaphone service .

I don’t actually think it would matter much in practice whichever of the Left candidates one – none is an Arthur Scargill, and none will really work hard to mobilise UNITE’s members to really confront the Tories , but they all would be (undoubtedly weak and shifty – like McCluskey) allies of the Left . But a UNITE led by Coyne and his corrupt cronies would be a disaster for the Left and workers struggle generally. That is what is at stake because of the poisonous sectarianism of the UK Left.

      1. It has worked well before so why change it. Clearly the left néeds a single candidate. The Blarites are loving this. Sectarianism has always been the headsman for the òverlords. If we are to make a real socialist movement then we need to begin with a win. It’s all too arcane.

    3. Joe, are you or have you ever been a member of the CPGB/CPB? Your post smacks of loyalty. How are you? Wobbly

      1. Alexadrescottish…No..and I have never run with the herd or been anything other than a Socialist former peoples democracy and long time Labour party member.(lapsed)..I am a Catholic and a Republican and support Sinn Fein and a united Ireland.I believe in a strong family tradition and background.I do not hide behind aliases and have opinions that do not always follow the herd..I do not take offence at the question as I have strong family and friends who are members of the Communist party.I until recently thought that the Labour party was the way forward,I do not believe it is and also believe it is anti democracy and anti working-class.I hope I have clarrified and I have never been wobbly on anything in my life…solidarity comrade.

  2. Yes it seems the Right are desperate for Beckett to withdraw and members are being encouraged not to support the Corbyn type candidate but the more Burnham type candidate who many of us worry will accommodate Starmer? All to keep out the Starmer candidate. But as socialists I believe at times you have to gamble (like Labour sticking with BREXIT and not listening to its Right & this throwing the GE away). So keep on in there Howard, I think he can win the members vote.

    1. Not so sure about Types Bazza, all I know is Whoever MSM, Neolabour Party Tories and The Israel Lobby are Attacking/Desperate to get rid of is the opposite of The Elites/Establishment’s Choice, that can only mean one thing, The are for THE PEOPLE.

    2. Spot on Bazza. ANYBODY who is a favoured Starmer candidate must be treated as if they’re infected as far as I’m concerned. I said two months ago they would do all they could to stop Beckett, and I was right. Turner will be a disaster in my opinion, and I say that as a Unite member of long standing. Judge a person by his actions not his words, and Turner has done bugger all in my opinion to help the Unite members in my neck of the woods.

  3. Remeber your comments skellynelly”ITs only by opinions “.At the time I thought I couldn’t agree with you more….Think about it and remember that we have different ways of working together to defeat neo liberalism and the Labour establishment party.Nothing to fall out over comrade..!

    1. True enough. If Turner wins as seems likely, there is a high possibility of Starmer being cemented in place for a long time to come with the support of GMB, Unison and Unite. That situation could be the catalyst that ends the Labour party and leads to a new socialist party. One can only hope.

      1. lundiel
Slight problem with Temporary Embarrassment losing millions of votes and bankrupting the party
Then put the Unions on notice, up with this the members will not put
Red Tories are not a serious or viable democratic alternative, to the real cheap and nasties, so are always doomed to failure
What is required as we come out of the pandemic looks a lot like what was on offer from JC, how we turn it around in the party is quite simple, just fucking do it, challenge him

      2. lundiel, you are totally correct on that. Turner will see to it that Starmer, Copper, Hodge, Evans and gang once and for crush the “Left” TOTALLY. Predictable and predicted now. Hodge knows it that’s why the creature bothered to tour the MSM to attack Howard Beckett.
        ⚠️🥀⚠️🥀⚠️🥀

      3. That situation could be the catalyst that ends the Labour party and leads to a new socialist party.

        Every cloud, an’ all that…

      4. Toffee – Not another one!

        Not another one….WHAT?

        Pipe down, you bore.

      5. Toffee – Not another ‘new socialist party’. How are all the previous incarnations of ‘the left’ progressing.

  4. Unite releases final nomination numbers for general secretary candidates

Unite the Union has released the numbers of valid branch nominations for the four general secretary candidates who

According to the union, the numbers of valid nominations received by each candidate are as follows:
    Howard Beckett – 328
    Gerard Coyne – 196
    Sharon Graham – 349
    Steve Turner – 525…….

…….Beckett has claimed that over 350 branches have endorsed him. While Unite has said the final totals “may vary slightly from these figures as outstanding issues regarding the validity of some nominations are resolved”.

The final numbers at the end of the process are not expected to change significantly, however. Unite sources have explained that it is possible some branches did not submit valid forms when casting their nominations.

There is now pressure on the three contenders considered to be on the left of the union – Turner, Graham and Beckett – to unite behind a single candidate. First-past-the-post is used for the vote rather than a preferential system.

Although Coyne has placed last in nominations, Unite insiders point out that when he ran for the general secretary post in 2017, he secured 187 nominations but won 41.3% of the vote. McCluskey had 1,185 nominations and 45.5% of the final vote.

      1. lundiel – . Are you trying to intimate that the figures I’ve given above are incorrect?
Even if HB is correct and all his claimed nominations turn out to be valid (who cares) it still puts him a very long way behind. Steve Turner who officially has at least 525 nominations which is still way in front of Beckett’s clamed 350 nominations. Unless you are acknowledging that HB lost the nominations race I’m struggling to see the point you are trying to make.

    1. It speakers volumes that SteveH (centrist dad), who is on the right of the party, is advising the left to unite behind Steve Turner in order to defeat the right.

      1. lundiel obvious to you and several here including me. How puzzling that some feel otherwise. EVEN after witnessing what Starmer and gang are doing? Very strange. In fact it is beyond strange.
        🔮❔🔮❔🔮❔

      2. lundiel – I don’t recall ever supporting the Blairites on these or any other pages. Can you prove otherwise?.

      3. Prove? I don’t need to prove anything, you’ve convicted yourself on this blog daily since you first decided to troll Skwawkbox. Your protestations are laughable, everyone here knows exactly what you are and who you represent. I feel sorry for you that you don’t have the courage of your convictions to stand up and be counted as Blair’s apostle. Iraq aside I’ve seen nothing from you that allows me to conclude you are anything other than a new Labour cultist.

      4. lundiel – “Prove? I don’t need to prove anything, “

That’s nothing more than a pathetic excuse for not being able to backup your ‘assertions’.

  5. I understand that the left candidates will be meeting this week to discuss a candidate for the left and so stop the scab coyle from slithering through the vote and taking the unite union for the right wing destroyers.Read this on Steve Turner web site.Common sense and really.?

    1. Joseph, u know I value your experience. I think highly of your ethos. In local elections, party nominations etc where there’re very many candidates or i’v not been able to research them, i too am guided by endorsements of the Communist party, SWP, my “Left” CLP groups.

However though I’ve only ever belonged to a royal college professional body and a different professional union, for the sake of protecting and developing unions and TRUE Labour in general and the wellbeing of “The MANY”, Howard Beckett is the only sound urgently needed choice.
      🦋🐝 🦋🐝 🦋🐝

      1. Thankyou ..signpost we can only follow our beliefs and although its an important vote its not a problem if we don’t agree.Politics is the “art of debate” and in that there is wisdom to be found solidarity comrade..

  6. Oh Dear,
Are we about to witness the “Left” performing their
interpretation of a classic Monty Python sketch again?

With FPTP they need tp get behind one candidate in solidarity to prevent the worst & least poular one winning.
The “Right” understand this – why don’t the”Left”

    https://youtu.be/WboggjN_G-4

    1. I suppose it depends which of these candidates you believe to be from the Left. Certainly from where I’m sitting the only person that fits that description is Beckett. The others are imposters, fakes. Turner has done NOTHING to help any Unite member in my area apart from backing Starmer. At least Beckett attended picket lines when we had them. Unite and Labour appear to be on the same track to lose more members. At least they’ll be holding hands laughing as they go down.

      1. Bazza, baz2001, lundiel, i agree with you all +++ The situation is urgent. Hodge, Watson, Mandelson, Blair and gang know that. I heard Hodge stress that on LBC radio. Hodge stressed that the Unite leader position is VERY important. Hodge roused to attack is usefully Right for once. Heed Hodge’s spiteful harangues ⚠️ 🥀⚠️🥀⚠️🥀

      2. Going down and popping up as lords and ladies.

  7. lundiel – I don’t recall ever supporting the Blairites on these or any other pages. Can you prove otherwise?.

    *Yawn*

You’ve never been known to criticise blairism

Just as you’ve blamed almost every mishap squarely at Corbyn’s feet… And STILL do so, for things that are happening under bliarism’s bastard progeny known as stammerism.

And before you shriek your protests that it doesn’t constitute proof I sincerely doubt there’s anyone will say you’ve done otherwise.

      1. Says the beaut who only voted stammer as “best of a bad bunch” but defends the axle-greased barnet to the fucking hilt.

When was the last time you openly criticised bliar or stammer?

You haven’t. Otherwise you’d come up with an answer instead of deluding yerself that you’re some sort of smartarse with your default methods that you’ve abused beyond human reasoning

Well nobody, but NOBODY is fooled by it.

You haven’t got the intelligence to be an idiot.

You soul-destroyingly boring, self-absorbed, piss-poor excuse for a petulant child.

      2. Toffee – ….and yet here you are again, initialising yet another exchange with me?
I do wonder why you choose to waste so much of your time trolling around after me, what do you get out of it.

      3. I said answer… When I meant a verbatim example of your supposed bliarite/stammerite criticism.

You won’t even accept that bliarism (under its stammerist guise) conspired to deprive the nation of a socialist government.

And you – just like the other thundertwunt – have the temerity to call yourselves ‘socialist’.

      4. Toffee – You are the one obsessing about my politics, why would I care what you think. If you want to prove a point then do it. I can’t be arsed with your silly games.

      5. See? So far up your own arse; you’re almost coming out the other side. No doubt you’d expect a welcoming committee when you do.

Far from obsessing over your politics like you’ve convinced yourself, wee fella, I’m calling you out on the bullshit you peddle, namely that you label both yourself and the muculent one as socialist.

What do I get from it? The pleasure of you squirm like some sort of circus contortionist act, almost pleading us to buy your snake oil.

Then, when that task is complete, watching you pretend you’re not arsed, like a jilted schoolgirl.

        Works every time.

    1. LOL, thank you. Since Blair continues to ‘stick his oar in’ politics and give his uncritical advice to the Tories I find it difficult to believe Starmer hasn’t had more than a few calls and texts from him on WhatsApp or Telegram. Or maybe Blair just leaves it to Mandleson.

  8. The important figure for nominations is 174 to get on the final ballot so let’s see it through and I think Howard can win. I heard ST speak twice and was far from impressed (though a decent working class guy). The Right of Labour took away the Corbyn dream so whilst some play bourgeois political games I would argue socialists should stand for what they believe in, Vote Howard Beckett and keep the dream alive.

    1. Howard Beckett we need to HEAR you EVERY WHERE and EVERY DAY till voting day!!! Get a move on!!!

      1. windchime – I thought everyone was aware of the timetable, obviously not. So for those who haven’t bothered to acquaint themselves with the basics ()its not hard to find) here is the timetable
The election timetable is as follows:

        Election details Dates
        • Nomination period: Thursday 6 May 2021 – 7 June 2021
        • Deadline for Receipt of Nominations: Wednesday 9 June 2021 at noon

        • Deadline for voting papers to be returned to the Independent Scrutineer: 23 August 2021 at noon
        • Declaration of results Thursday 26 August 2021

I trust this will avoid any confusion on your part in the future.

Your reasoning that Beckett should be the chosen one to stand against Coyne is obviously complete bollocks he failed by a long way to get the largest number of nominations . If Beckett was so inspiring then why did he only manage get ⅔ of the nominations that Steve Turner did..

  9. From my experience & reading it seems that where Howard was nominated it was usually by a landslide? They key question then is where Turner & Graham were nominated was it by a three way narrow vote? If these first and second propositions are correct then this could bode well for Beckett, and possibly point to a Beckett victory? I could be right, I could be wrong? Time soon for members to speak.

    1. As a Unite member I repeat again my opinion, based upon actual experience of the candidates. The real Left candidate is Beckett, so why should he step down? It’s what the Blairites want. The others might be working class folk but that doesn’t necessarily make them Left Wing Socialists does it?
The ONLY person to attend picket lines in my neck of the woods was Howard Beckett, he gave us solidarity when it was needed, and the other three couldn’t be bothered turning up. And don’t get me started on Coyne, he shouldn’t even be a member of Unite, just as Trilateral Starmer should never be allowed to be a member of the Labour Party.

      1. Pay and conditions….Thats the real job for a union man.I think many have forgotten about the day job for the leader of the unite union and many are thinking that the leader of unite should save the establishment Labour party. The news is its far too late for that, but its worth a try especially were theres nothing to loose, its already gone.Come up with a good leader out of a hanfull of shy socialist mps and councillors and see what happens?.I tried for half a century but ended up in the naughty corner ignored and abandoned by fellow councillors and so called left wing socialist working class members of the Labour party and its soul destroying. You try I am too old for this game thats why I realise that you may get lucky and find the “messia, but look inside the Labour party not hoping that a union leader will sort out the diabolical Labour party. The 3 left wing socialist candidates will sort out the real leader of the unite union and you will have to wait till August for the result.Beckett belongs in Westminster not fighting the good fight against the establishment Labour party from the unite union .leave the Labour party to the Labour membership to sort out the lunatic behaviour of voting for a nailed on plant with the right wing title nailed on his head Sir Rodney Starmer leader of the” opposition “.

  10. Steve H your comments seriously are not welcome. The morning star covering the mtg between the 3 left wing candidates to stop coyle is more important than your comments that are injurious to the left wing for democracy inside and outside the establishment Labour party.

    1. Joseph – Get over yourself! What do you care about the Labour party that you spend a fair proportion of your time slagging off. The party that you abandoned because we were so irredeemable.

      1. Yes Steve H I wish you all the best as well as the rest of the right wing destroyers mtg in Cornwall under the self appointed cream of society the G7.Hoping that this bunch of parasites choke on their banquet in the Cornish monsoon rains that are far more likely than anything from the G7.Let them strut their stuff “because their neoliberal jamboree is on the eve of destruction.

      2. Joseph – …..and that is relevant to this particular conversation because…..?

      3. The labour party – as it stands – gets slagged off because it it is a servile, toerag government enabling association.

You get slagged off because you attempt to excuse it.

        …And because you’re a gobshite.

      4. Steve H…..ITs relevant because with your twisted veiw of the Labour party you prop up your Zionist leader and a whole stinking swamp culture of the neo liberal alliance with the torys, libs and the establishment Labour party.Dont fish for comments you may not like them or the truth.
