With the last day of nominations underway in the Unite union’s general secretary election, Howard Beckett is the clear choice of the celtic nations – and with far stronger support in England than his rivals hoped, too:

These results have come despite the best efforts of rival campaigns to organise against him at a branch level – and even to intimidate Scottish, Welsh and regional members – and they are driven by a grassroots surge, in response to his combination of lawyer’s skills and fighter’s mindset, compared to the ‘machine’ strength of his competitors.
