Former Tory MP Elphicke convicted on three counts of sexual assault

Then-Dover MP was reinstated to Tory whip in 2018 in spite of pending charges

Charlie Elphicke

Former Tory MP Charlie Elphicke has been convicted in Southwark Crown Court today on three counts of sexual assault committed in 2007 and 2016. Elphicke had denied groping the two victims.

A former Conservative MP has been found guilty of one count of sexual assault against a woman in 2007, and two further counts against a second woman in 2016. His wife, who replaced him as Dover MP, was present as the verdict was delivered.

Elphicke was restored to the Tory whip in late 2018, after an initial suspension over the accusations, just in time to vote for Theresa May when her leadership was challenged.

Labour’s Dawn Butler, then on the party’s front bench, described his reinstatement as a “betrayal of women”.

Elphicke awaits a sentencing hearing in September.

  1. The court heard that Elphicke chased one of his victims around the room whilst chanting “I’m a naughty Tory”.

    1. Yeah, but your beloved most likely wouldn’t have prosecuted when DPP.

Will he make it known the sentence will be too lenient, when it’s passed?

  2. IIRC I read somewhere today he’s been informed by the Court that no punishment is off the table, ie imprisonment is possible.
Do I vaguely remember there’s a length-of-sentence condition on being barred from standing again as an MP?
I wonder if he still gets his bountiful Parliamentary pension? I suppose the Lords is out of the question.
In some circumstances pensions can be forfeited I believe – or is that just on US cop shows?

  3. 18months -suspended for two years, or 6months in a cushy open nick.

  4. Just the point of the sword. He’ll walk and could be offered a Labour seat in a cushy by-election. Have I finally reached the state of madness? There again who would have ever believed that Max Headroom would be Labours golden, glorious, leader? Now is the time where we have a duty as socialists everywhere to build a new party. What does it take for people to realise that we live in a totalitarian, parliamentary monarchy. Regards ☮️

  5. BREAKING NEWS
What is it with Tories and their sense of entitlement with women.

A former Tory minister has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

Sky News understands the MP was accused by a young woman who used to work in parliament.

He was arrested and taken to an east London police station on Saturday morning and was released on bail on Saturday night.

A police statement said: “On Friday 31 July, the Metropolitan Police Service received allegations relating to four separate incidents involving allegations of sexual offences and assault.

“These offences are alleged to have occurred at addresses in Westminster, Lambeth and Hackney between July 2019 and January 2020.

“The Met has launched an investigation into the allegations.

“A man in his 50s was arrested on Saturday 1 August on suspicion of rape.”

  6. Former Tory ministers in their fifties – how many of those can there be?
    One amusing Google result:
“I hope that if they are hunting for evidence that their hunt ends up hunting out the right result and the hunt for justice is ultimately successful.”
    Heh heh heh.
