Few MPs at last night’s ‘PLP’ meeting outraged that Corbyn spent more time on environment than on Brexit

A handful of Labour MPs gave away just how deeply they are embedded in their own ‘bubble’ last night when they reacted with outrage to the fact that Jeremy Corbyn prioritised climate change during Monday’s meeting of the ‘PLP’ – the parliamentary Labour party.
Politics Home’s Kevin Schofield tweeted the news, apparently without irony and without comment on the appropriateness of such a response.
But others didn’t miss the obvious: that climate change is a far more important topic than the Brexit obsession of the ‘Westminster bubble’.
One Labour figure retorted:
There are no MPs on a dead planet.

The exaggeration of the anonymous MP’s ‘disbelief in the room’ also speaks volumes of the inflated sense of importance on the part of the small but vocal band of MPs who never miss an opportunity to attack Corbyn and his team.

The EU elections are next week, aren’t they?
Yes, and the strategy has been signed off and rolled out. The members (hi, remember us!?!) are busy putting it into action. Time won’t stand still between now and 23rd, there will be the day after, the newspapers of this week are just next weeks recycling. Our leaders need to see the bigger picture, and what direction we are moving in WHATEVER the EU election outcome.

As JC himself has clearly stated the UK needs to co-operate with the rest of Europe on climate change so I would have thought that the leadership would have shown more enthusiasm for winning the fast approaching EU elections so that we can exert the maximum influence whilst we are still in the EU.
You can have an iMax sized big picture but without influence to implement it this vision will remain nothing more than a vision.
I think we should be realistic. May will try and prevent the election from happening, if it does happen then to prevent the MEPs from taking their seats. The only realistic option is for a soft Brexit with close cooperation with the EU on pollution, carbon emissions, etc. As one who is acticely part of the Labour EU election campaign, I would strongly suggest there is a good chance of Labour winning if our members and supporters get out there and start taking part in the campaign. A huge number of potential Brexit party supporters are under the impression that voting Farage means he will take over negotiations and lead to a WTO rules withdrawal. Once they understand the reality, and that he is an opportunist who has never taken part in any part of govt even when a MEP, when he could, and that he has threatened to “put on khaki and pick up a gun” if his view doesn’t prevail, then they come around pretty quick. This is based on hours of conversations, changing one voter at a time. My advice – to all – is the same as Labours today. The biggest threat we are facing this week is a resurgent far right, and everyone of us must get out there and start turning the tide. Third hand reports of the plp meeting, and the amount of time Corbyn did or didn’t discuss these elections is another success for the chicken coopers. Dont fall for it.

Brexit supporters know MEPs are a waste of space and can’t negotiate anything as they don’t have legislative powers (That’s one of their reasons for voting for Brexit in the first place. You are just perpetuating the slur that they’re all thick.). People are voting for the Brexit party in the European elections in the hope they will disrupt proceedings because Westminster is dragging its feet. This is their chance to be heard.
SteveH…you’re mad! The European Parliament is toothless, impotent, it can’t legislate and there are more lobbyists in Brussels than Washington.
I’ll tell you what will happen, there’ll be photoshoots with Greta Thunberg while behind the scenes green corporates will be fighting over subsidies. So while the man in the street pays dearly for handouts to green start ups and for schemes like carbon capture, the use of oil will continue unabated until every last drop is used up.
And there will be no action on consumer Capitalism, certainly not from the EU.

Perhaps if yo had familiarised yourself better with the workings of the various EU institutions you would appreciate the significance of the fast approaching EU elections.
The vote share of the various EU political groupings will to a large extent determine whether we end up with another RW President of the EU Commission or the LW candidate (who’s standing on a manifesto that reads like it could have been written by Corbyn) gets appointed.
It is worth noting that the PES candidate for the job is currently the front-runner in a series of debates/hustings that are being held at universities throughout the EU in conjunction with the Financial Times
Steven, I’m not suggesting that Brexit party supporters are thick but they have been targeted with misinformation and propaganda. Farage is very good at that. It’s not just Brexit supporters that think this, but they are the ones we try and help understand their vote is important.
Talking is a great way of really engaging with people and they are actually very worried- on all sides – about the fragility of democracy.
And let us not forget Labour’s nuclear mafia who successfully demanded that this statement be deleted from the final version of Labour’s general election manifesto:
‘any prime minister should be extremely cautious about ordering the use of weapons of mass destruction which would result in the indiscriminate killing of millions of innocent civilians’
