FBU action secures offer to protect Merseyside night-time cover AND increase crew/engines

The SKWAWKBOX has previously covered the attempts of Fire Brigades Union (FBU) members on Merseyside to combat what they call the ‘revenge‘ actions of the local fire authority in closing stations and reducing crews and services. The FBU’s efforts had the support of all local Labour parties in the area – and had borne partial fruit when an authority move to accelerate the closure plan was abandoned.

But now firefighters and local residents are assessing a majors step forward in their fight after the union secured an offer not only to maintain threatened night-time services but also to increase in crews and engines.

FBU regional secretary Mark Rowe welcomed the proposals, saying:

This is a victory for the FBU and Merseyside communities in the face of savage austerity, but it is mainly a victory for common sense.

In a letter to FBU members, Rowe listed the gains made on behalf of Merseyside residents, but warned that the offer had not yet been fully detailed or assessed:

SKWAWKBOX comment:

This win is a clear indication of the strength of unions and Labour activists working in solidarity and the SKWAWKBOX congratulates all those involved. The Fire Authority must move promptly to complete the process and formalise the new arrangements.

  1. Ace news!

People around here can sleep a little more soundly. I not the letter makes mention of thanks to Wallasey & Riverside CLP’s, but I didn’t hear very much from (ill)eagle over this matter; and no doubt she’ll say it’s down to her (same goes for ellman over the water).

A message for the people of Bidston & St James’ ward. Your arrogant Cllr Brian Kenny was fully behind the cuts. You simply MUST cut him loose.
