Drakeford: “power to the Welsh people”/”Grym i Bobl Cymru”

Welsh Labour leadership and First Minister contender Mark Drakeford – whom the SKWAWKBOX exclusively interviewed last month – launches his vision for reform under a socialist government in Wales at Newport Centre on Thursday 8th November at 5pm.

Drakeford will lay out the following key points:​

  • After 20 years of Welsh Labour leading government there is an opportunity to be more radical in our approach by giving increased power to the people of Wales
  • Confirm long-term independent oversight of the Ministerial Code and enable the citizens of Wales to discuss issues of concern with Cabinet Members
  • Appoint Special Advisers through open advertisement and pre-appointment hearings for Chairs of public bodies in Wales
  • Elect the Welsh member of the Labour National Executive Committee (NEC) on the same basis as election of Leader and Deputy Leader via OMOV
  • Extend local democracy franchise to 16 and 17-year olds
  • Retain the 22 local authorities in Wales to bolster regional work and make local services more resilient
  • Seek devolution of aspects of criminal justice, beginning with youth justice and the probation service

Drakeford will also raise the need for more Assembly Members, and part two of the Welsh Labour Party Democracy Review. ​

The left-winger has the backing of sixteen Labour Assembly Members including Cabinet Secretaries and Ministers and nine of Wales’ MPs, plus unions including Unite and the NUM south east Wales.​

Policies Drakeford has announced so far include:

  • A Social Partnership Act
  • Appoint a Cabinet Secretary for Housing
  • Fair work and a living wage
  • A new Community Bank for Wales
  • A not-for-profit Welsh Energy company
  • Strengthen and enforce the ban on fracking
  • Harness our natural resources and develop a plan for ‘green growth’
  • Establish an Expert Committee to advise on impact of nuclear power plants at Hinckley Point and Wylfa
  • Invest in further alleviation of flooding and coastal erosion
  • Action on the gender pay gap
  • Backing 50:50 representation of women in the Welsh Assembly and Welsh Government Cabinet
  • End violence against women and girls
  • Extend free school meals to more families
  • Extend the school holidays ‘fun and food’ programme and make it permanent
  • Set targets to reduce numbers if children taken into care
  • Abolish zero hours contracts in the social care sector
  • Change the way Wales invests in digital infrastructure
  • Support tech incubators and start-ups
  • Help local firms get more public contracts
  • Scrap poor-value PFI contracts
  • Legislate for better working conditions.​
