On a chaotic morning of wildly conflicting accounts about the selection hustings for the Lewisham East by-election, left-wing candidate Sakina Sheikh was reported to be stepping down because of a previous membership of a rival organisation.
As the SKWAWKBOX has exclusively reported, she was never a member and had merely chaired a hustings that included the other group.
The fake ‘revelation’ appears to be right-wing mischief to disrupt the proceedings and influence the result.
The fake news goes yet further, with some ‘MSM’ claiming that Jeremy Corbyn’s chief of staff, Karie Murphy, overruled Labour General Secretary Jennie Formby and the National Executive Committee’s Jim Kennedy to keep Ms Sheikh on the ballot. Reports even ran as far as to claim that this meant Ms Murphy was the real power in the Labour Party.
But that ‘news’ is also untrue. Apart from the obvious fact that Ms Sheikh had done nothing to merit her removal from the ballot, as she had not been a member of a rival organisation while a Labour member, senior Labour sources have confirmed to the SKWAWKBOX that the decision to keep her on was made by Jennie Formby.
And a wise decision it was, given that the claim against Ms Sheikh was false.
Bravo to all concerned – and an object lesson in the kind of machinations the Labour right will resort to in order to damage Labour’s leadership and cling to power or influence.
