As the SKWAWKBOX covered earlier, the Tories’ petition for the reinstatement of Uber’s London licence – which Transport for London (TfL) has declined on the grounds that the company is not a fit licensee – is such a bizarre phenomenon that speculation is rife about the reasons for it.
It’s not merely ‘lay’ observers who consider the Tories’ behaviour to be unprecedented. London barrister Gerald Gouriet knows a thing or two – according to his website, he specialises in licensing issues and the ‘bible’ of legal firms, Chambers & Partners, wrote of him earlier this year:
Far and away the most impressive on his feet; there is no one else in this market who is more skilful as an advocate.
Hardly the type to be given to hyperbole on social media – and his astonishment at the Conservative Party’s unprecedented decision to issue the petition was palpable:
The SKWAWKBOX understands from industry sources that there is more than one piece of ‘ongoing litigation’ surrounding the issue of Uber’s licence – and yet the party of (something barely approximating) government is meddling in the matter and quite possibly compromising proper legal process.
Uber and Conservative HQ have yet to respond to the SKWAWKBOX’s questions about what lies behind this action on the part of the Tories, in spite of ample time to do so.

They want the drivers paid as little as possible and given fewer rights so as they can be carted around London as cheaply as possible.
If they had their way (Especially the likes of rees-mogg & toadfaced mellor) it’d be back to clearing the roads of every other motor vehicle so they could have the road to themselves & their horse-drawn phaetons – and they’d be allowed to thrash the horses & drivers.
‘It’s akin to giving the hackney the monopoly’ they bleat.
My arse it is – there’s all sorts of other apps/businesses in londinium like mytaxi & kabbee to name but two…
