On Saturday evening, as Labour delegates from around the UK gathered in readiness for the party’s annual Conference, Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and Labour Chair Ian Lavery talked to delegates at the north-west of England regional reception.
McDonnell talked of solidarity and the appetite for Labour policies. Lavery talked rousingly of party leader Jeremy Corbyn; of generations of dull, choreographed, disappointing conferences and of the radical difference delegates are about to see in a conference where space is made for members’ voices as a priority; of two years of ‘really, really tough’ times leading to a membership of 570,000 members and a ‘great manifesto’.
And of the need to put that manifesto and membership to use in power – replacing an imploding Tory party fighting like rats in a sack, in which its politicians despise each other:
