A vital opportunity at Birkenhead CLP AGM – today

Birkenhead’s old Town Hall

Birkenhead CLP (constituency Labour party) on Merseyside holds its annual general meeting (AGM) this evening. The CLP, which is represented – after a fashion – by the right-wing MP Frank Field, has an opportunity to make a transformative decision on how it is run and who by. The decision it makes this evening will have huge ramifications for the nature and actions of Labour in the area.

The meeting will take place at The Laurie’s Centre, Claughton Rd, Birkenhead CH41 6EY. Doors will open at 6.30pm for a prompt 7pm start.

A local activist told the SKWAWKBOX:

We have a full slate of experienced, honest and talented members, who are committed to:

  • unequivocal support for Jeremy Corbyn led Labour Party
  • a member-led Party, putting grassroots members at the centre of Party activities
  • reinstating Party democracy, which was diluted in the Kinnock/Blair/Brown eras
  • supporting Socialist policies at all levels of Government
  • support for public sector workers, and other workers whose rights and conditions are under threat, especially disabled people
  • opposing privatisation and austerity wherever we can; especially in the NHS and at local government level
  • supporting RMT ‘Keep the Guard on the train” campaign.

The ‘old guard’ as Frank Field refers to his acolytes, is well versed in bussing in their supporters – the bulk of which never appear until the cabal calls upon their votes. We fully expect the same thing to happen tomorrow.

Field has called on disabled workers to be made exempt from minimum wage legislation and has repeated the trope that disabled workers are less productive than those without disabilities. It’s time for a change.

The cabal of right-wing, clapped-out councillors needs a shakeup. We now have a record membership – they just need to turn up, in numbers, and make change happen!

If you are a Labour member in the Birkenhead constituency, it’s vital that you attend tonight’s meeting to help kick-start the process of bringing local Labour into line with its leadership and membership.

Get there well before 7pm to ensure you are admitted. Take your membership card or digital membership card (available by signing into Labour Membersnet) and a photo-ID just in case.
