This blog has received various messages about last night’s article on Bristol West CLP (Constituency Labour Party) sending 19 delegates to this year’s Labour Conference in Brighton – a fact that got mightily up the nose of the right-wing, not that they’ll admit the real reason for it.
A lot of those messages are to the effect of how encouraging it is to see members wanting to get involved and organising to get the right, pro-Corbyn delegates to the Conference to support vital measures like the McDonnell Amendment. – and to defeat an anti-democratic attempt by Labour’s right-wing faction to go back to the days when a few MPs had as much voting power in leadership elections as the entire membership.
When the right-wing Labour Establishment is conducting a war of attrition against the party’s leader and most of its members, it’s easy to get bogged down in all the negative, infuriating things being done – but there are more reasons to be positive.
And members getting involved and organised to democratise the party is definitely one.
So the SKWAWKBOX wants to publish a series of articles about successes by the Left in overcoming the cynical attempts by the right to control delegate selections – so we all have a ‘big picture’ overview of the good things that are going on and of what works.
So if…
- you’re a Labour member and your CLP has selected good, left-wing Conference delegates or
- you’re in a union branch and your branch is sending good, left-wing delegates to Conference
please drop a note to SKWAWKBOXCLP@outlook.com with the details – how many delegates and how you organised to get them selected, along with your location.
Don’t post them in the comments, although by all means put a note there to say you’ve sent the email. Locations will be made approximate before publication, as we don’t want to hand the right-wingers a handy list of CLPs to suspend – would any of us put that past them? – and then the articles will be published to help others motivate and organise their members for similar success.

The secretary of my Unite branch (not a right winger!) says the union cannot send delegates to conference. Is he wrong?
All unions can send delegates to Conference based on the number of members in the branch: From Labour Rules Chapter 3: Party Conference:-
Delegates duly appointed by each affiliated
trade union or other affiliated organisation to
the number of one delegate for each 5,000
members or part thereof on whom affiliation
fees, by-election insurance premiums and any
levies due were paid for the year ending 31
December prior to the Party conference. A
requirement is placed on affiliated organisations
that their delegation should include women at
least in the proportions in which they are
represented in that organisation’s membership.
Where the membership of an affiliated trade
union or other organisation is less than 5,000
members, an additional woman delegate may be
appointed if the women’s membership is 400 or
more.
