Tomorrow’s ‘London for Sudan’ (LFS) march will mark the anniversary of Sudan’s popular ‘October Revolution‘ uprising and raise awareness of the ongoing, UAE- and Israel-enabled genocide in that country.
‘Resistance and revolution’
A statement by LFS explains:
The Sudanese legacy is one borne out of resistance and revolution; a people committed to democracy and equity. It was this commitment that roused university students in 1964 to openly defy the incumbent military dictatorship and demand democratic rule. Unfortunately, this would be a fight the Sudanese people would have to reignite in 1985, 2018, 2021 and once again right now in the wake of a fully fledged counter-revolutionary proxy war.
One year on from the 18 month brutal siege on the city of El Fasher by the UAE funded RSF, which claimed the lives of over 6000 people in just three days, we stand together in collective grief and anger at the inaction of the global community. Despite explicit evidence which suggests a genocide was enacted on the Darfuri people, the Sudanese people’s pain continues to be a mere footnote in international media.
This Saturday we are marching to commemorate the bravery and determination of those who fought for us 60 years ago and those currently fighting for a democratically led Sudan today. For those who lost their lives in the pursuit of freedom, and for those who have never seen a free Sudan. For those displaced from their homes, and for those who do not recognise the Sudan they live in today.
We are coming together as a coalition of Sudanese organisations, unions and movements united in the demand for peace, justice, democracy and an end to the atrocities. By joining forces to mobilise for international awareness and action with the #alloutforsudan campaign and #ElfasherRed | أحمر_الفاشر# movement for the the first anniversary of the genocide in El Fasher.
As we continue to witness one of the most heinous and documented crimes in modern history, rivers of blood, visible even from satellite images, mark a catastrophe that shames humanity and challenges our collective conscience. And yet, the silence from the world is deafening. This is more than a distant tragedy. The UN Security Council alleges British made weapons were supplied to Rapid Support Forces (RSF), likely via weapons exports to the UAE. This is a homegrown, UK-backed and internationally sanctioned atrocity. Resistance seems to be not only ingrained within the Sudanese identity, but a rite of passage for each coming generation; a cycle we are desperately attempting to break free from.
A Deepening Crisis Due To Global Complicity, Inaction and Power-Driven Destruction
Disagreements about political control and the integration of forces during a planned transition to civilian rule (2019-2023) in Sudan, quickly developed into a full fledged violent assault on the Sudanese people by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
Over 13 million people have been forcibly displaced and entire regions are being decimated, from Darfur to Bara to Kordofan to Al Obeid and beyond.
Displaced families are living in dire conditions, lacking basic necessities for survival from clean water, food, shelter and healthcare, to protection and psychological support.
Approximately 41% of the population are facing acute food insecurity, with regions such as Darfur reaching the level 5 IPC – the highest and most severe Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, with numerous hunger-related deaths being reported, a completely man-made famine.
The UAE-funded RSF has seized El-Fasher for its strategic importance, forcing thousands to flee the humanitarian hub for Sudan’s five Darfur states. The militia has launched a multi-front genocidal assault, carrying out ethnic cleansing and sexual violence.
LFS is demanding:
immediate action to address the atrocities faced by civilians in the regions [and] to amplify the demands set out in our letter to the Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband calling for an end to weapons exports to the UAE and increased humanitarian assistance to those in Sudan.
