Jewish group demands answer to 5 Aug letter to Starmer – and adds 28 new signatories incl Margolyes

A group of leading British Jews has demanded an answer from Keir Starmer to their letter to him a week ago calling for an end to Britain’s collaboration in Israel’s genocide in Gaza and Starmer’s persecution of anti-genocide groups – and have updated their letter with twenty-eight additional new signatures, including that of national treasure Miriam Margolyes.

In an email to Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, organiser Jenny Manson wrote:

Since we wrote the letter there has been the horrifying announcement by Netanyahu of a plan to take control of Gaza City.  The failure of the world to end Palestinian suffering both in Gaza and in the West Bank shames us all.  We call in the letter for much tougher action, and today we call on you to recognise Palestine immediately and unconditionally.  The announcement made by your government, using the recognition of a Palestinian state as a threat to Israel,  has damaged the case for recognition.

Manson also urged them to read Susie Becher’s article in the Times of Israel titled “Mr Prime Minister what were you thinking?” and quotes the following from it condemning Starmer’s use of Palestinian statehood as a conditional threat to Netanyahu:

Listing conditions that Israel could meet to avert the move, Starmer needlessly harmed the recognition campaign by framing it as a punitive measure rather than one that will benefit both peoples.

By asserting conditionality, Starmer undermined the legitimate argument that the Palestinians’ right to exercise self-determination is inalienable and is anchored in international law.

Starmer’s Downing Street security did not allow the group to deliver their letter on 5 August and refused to take it to Number 10, so it had to be posted. Starmer has not yet responded to either the letter or the follow-up email.

  1. Listing conditions that Israel could meet to avert the move, Starmer needlessly harmed the recognition campaign by framing it as a punitive measure rather than one that will benefit both peoples.>/i>

    Exactly.

“Now listen, benny…You won’t get any sprinkles on your jelly & ice cream unless you stop starving that almost dead horse you’ve been torturing “

  2. Whilst I disagree with almost everything Starmer does, and says at home and abroad, I still feel total shame that he represents the UK, … and me. He is an utter embarrassment and I can’t wait for the time when he sees the writing on the wall and goes to his new job at Blackrock.
