Disabled people to protest in Cardiff next week against Starmer govt cuts

DPAC calls for support for 3 June protest

The Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) group is mounting a protest next Tuesday against Keir Starmer’s and DWP Secretary Liz Kendall’s dishonest war on disabled and sick people, which will take around £6,000 a year from almost half a million people on disability and long-term sickness benefits. A notification from DPAC gives details:

Disabled People Against Cuts will be protesting outside, and participating in, the disability cuts consultation event in Cardiff on Tuesday 3rd June. It is the only public consultation event for the whole of Wales. We invite you to join us.

Those of us who can take taxis or cars will meet outside the front of Cardiff Central train station at 12 noon, to travel to the consultation as a group at 12:20. If you miss us, don’t worry because there will still be stewards in high-vis there to help.

Some will prefer to make their own way there for 1pm. The consultation venue is Mercure Cardiff North Hotel Circle Way East, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff, CF23 9XF. Travel info is attached. Remember to keep receipts of all transport costs if you are a ticket holder.

The venue is inaccessible for many disabled people. The DWP left it until the last minute to tell us, despite disabled people (who have tickets) asking to know the location to plan our journeys and accommodation and access requirements. We think this is disability discrimination by the DWP and is unlawful.

If you cannot make the event, you can send us things you want raised at the consultation. We will raise it for you.

Cardiff Trades Council are organising stewarding to keep us safe. Trade union stewards that can help or offer lifts (12-4pm on the day) are encouraged to contact cardiffctuc@gmail.com

Important information

We have prepared an instruction booklet with information about the day – easy-read statement, sample press statement, how to prepare, what time, how to travel, how to stay safe, etc.

You can find it attached to this email. We have tested it for use with screen readers, but let us know if you have any problems.

You may like to print out a copy and bring it with you.

We also have prepared an audio version: https://bit.ly/dpac-cardiff-consultation-audio

An online copy will be made available at LinkTr.ee/SwanseaDPAC

The press statement and easy-read leaflet are also attached in Welsh/Cymraeg.

Thank you

Thank you to Cardiff Trades Council for organising stewarding to keep us safe. Thank you to our members and allies who have worked very hard to make the protest safe and as accessible as possible and prepared this information at short notice all within just 24 hours of the venue being known. Thank you to everyone coming on the day, and thank you to everyone there with us in spirit.
