Hossam Shbat’s mother speaks out

The mother of murdered Palestinian journalist Hossam Shbat, who was killed yesterday in Gaza by the Israeli occupation in a targeted strike after being placed on a kill-list of journalists, has spoken to a Palestinian news group about her last time with her son and his courage and determination to expose Israel’s genocide.

She said that she had told her son that he was likely to be killed if he reported for Al Jazeera:

When he joined Al Jazeera, I told him, ‘Those who work with Al Jazeera would die.’ He answered, ‘I’m not better than my colleagues. They are all my brothers.’

And she said that her son, who would eke out a piece of bread amid Israel’s criminal starvation-siege of Gaza and told her just before his death that the people around him seemed to be glowing with light, in what may have been a premonition of his approaching martyrdom, was a ‘hero who defended his homeland’:

Shbat, who was killed yesterday in a bombing strike on his clearly-marked press vehicle, was placed on a kill list by the occupation last October as it sought to silence the journalists who expose its endless crimes in Gaza. The regime boasted last night of his murder. UK PM Keir Starmer and Foreign Secretary David Lammy, along with almost all UK ‘mainstream’ media, have been silent on his murder and that of his colleague Mohammad Mansour, who was also killed yesterday.
