Show of disrespect by Mr and Mrs Starmer for victims of Germany – and of Israel
Keir Starmer has been slammed for using a visit with his wife to the Auschwitz Holocaust memorial as a photo opportunity. The pair were followed by TV cameras as they walked around the former concentration camp and placed a wreath at the memorial:
But using the memorial for political promotion is considered grossly disrespectful to the millions of victims of the nazi genocide – and it’s not the first time Starmer has committed this insult to their memory as Labour leader:
It seems Starmer either doesn’t care or his memory doesn’t stretch back two and a half years. The display was a stark contrast with Starmer’s predecessor Jeremy Corbyn, who made the press pack make do with a long-lens photo of his back as he walked alone among the grave markers:
Respondents pointed out the significance of the show of contempt:
Others pointed out the gross hypocrisy of attending a memorial to genocide when he is supporting Israel’s genocide in Gaza:
And others still pointed out that Auschwitz was liberated from the nazis by the Russians, while Starmer is funding neo-nazis in Ukraine against Russia and is considered by many to be pushing for the UK to enter the war:
The German Tikvah Institute criticised Starmer’s 2022 visit as a “use [of] the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe as a background for your election campaign video” and the UK ‘Campaign against Antisemitism’ described it as “a matter of decency and long-established convention in Germany that you never stoop to using the Berlin Holocaust Memorial as some kind of a prop”.
Short memory indeed – perhaps Starmer thinks that his full-blooded support for Israel’s slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians in Gaza means it’s ok.
