US ‘national economic security’ is good reason for Trump’s position, Starmer’s Foreign Secretary suggests
David Lammy has empathised, in an interview with LBC, with US president-elect Donald Trump’s threat to use military force to annex Greenland.
Lammy legitimised Trump’s ‘serious’ concerns that he claims have led to Trump’s threat, saying that US ‘national economic security’ in the face of Russia’s and China’s ‘designs’ on Greenland are behind Trump’s refusal to rule out war as a means of making Greenland a US colony – it is in fact a Danish self-governing territory. Those ‘designs’ appear to be limited to a recent bid by China to pay for ‘rare earth minerals’ from Greenland, which Greenland is entitled to sell as it wishes – though Russia has responded to Trump’s posturing by saying it is now ‘keeping a close eye’ on events there:
