Emergency rally for hospital staff detained by Israel Monday in London

An emergency rally is being held tonight (Monday 30 Dec) outside the US embassy in London to demand the immediate release of Dr Hussam Abu Safiya and other illegally-detained medics and patients from the now-destroyed Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza. Reports indicate that at least some of the detainees have been tortured.

A statement by the organisers reads:

IMMEDIATELY RELEASE DR. HUSSAM ABU SAFIYA, COLLEAGUES & PATIENTS

HANDS OFF HEALTHCARE!

Join us at the Community Camp for Palestine at the start of the Global Week for Gazan Hospitals.

We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, his colleagues and patients! They were all detained on 27 December by US-backed Israeli occupation forces that had besieged and targeted the hospital and its surroundings for weeks, in violation of international law.

Despite relentless clear and consistent calls from Dr. Hussam to the so-called “international community” for protection for the Kamal Adwan Hospital, none was forthcoming. Many staff and patients have been tortured, sexually abused and executed. Hospital buildings have been burned down and there are credible witness testimonies that Dr. Hussam was stripped and heavily beaten before being detained.

The whereabouts of Dr. Hussam and others are currently unknown. This is a violation of international law.

These are war crimes!

We demand that their whereabouts are immediately disclosed and that they are all immediately and unconditionally released.

US-UK-EU-backed Israel must stop targeting Gaza’s healthcare system. Since 7 October 2023, over 1050 healthcare workers have been killed in Gaza by the IOF. According to WHO, from an initial 36 medical facilities in Gaza, this latest crime leaves no functioning hospital in northern Gaza and only nine partially functioning in the south. It constitutes part of US-backed Israel’s plan to ethnically cleanse and genocide the population of Gaza.
