Israeli spy unit 8200 in ‘worst crisis in its history’

Unit whose operatives mark their headsets with the number of Palestinians killed is in meltdown, apparently

US news site Axios, quoting former Israeli intelligence officers, has said that the occupation army’s ‘Unit 8200’ cyberspy outfit is in the worst crisis in its history after its failures on 7 October last year and the casualties inflicted by repeated successful strikes on its home base by Lebanese militia.

Three former senior officers of the unit, interviewed by the site, implicated the unit’s new leader Ori Stav – appointed after the resignation in September of former commander Yossi Sariel – in the failure to predict the Hamas raid, despite sources from several other countries warning Israel’s military that the raid was imminent. Stav was deputy leader of the unit for three years before being appointed to take over.

The crisis comes as panic among Israeli frontline units escalates, with even ‘elite’ troops refusing for months to go back into Gaza, and now Lebanon.

Unit 8200 is notorious for targeting Palestinians for murder or blackmail long before 7 October 2023. Unit members are said to mark crosses on their headset for each Palestinian killed. UK PM Keir Starmer, an avowed supporter of Israel who has repeatedly refused to condemn Israel’s genocide in Gaza or even to use the word to describe the mass slaughter of Palestinian civilians and who is implicated in its war crimes after the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant, appointed former Unit 8200 spy Assaf Kaplan to monitor online conversations. Kaplan, who had disgraced Israeli spy Shai Masot among his Facebook friends, is believed to be still in post.

  1. Gaza bombardment worsens superbug outbreaks

There is a growing and dire public health crisis taking place in Gaza. Israeli blockades and hospital bombings are fuelling a superbug emergency, with civilians who survive starvation and injury later facing untreatable, life-threatening infections.

Doctors on the ground told the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (TBIJ) they were treating wounds infested with maggots and using vinegar to fight infections.

“Wounds are left open much longer [and the] injured are delayed in receiving proper care or not able to get care at all, which increases the risk of infections and emergence of antimicrobial resistance [AMR],” says Krystel Moussally, an epidemiologist monitoring the situation for Doctors without Borders (MSF).

The infections are so severe that they don’t respond to many of the antibiotics that are designed to treat them. Badly infected wounds can lead to limb amputations and, in some cases, death.

  3. The government is not against all welfare spending though.

The plan to increase military spending to 2.5% of GDP represents a considerable increase in welfare spending for arms companies. The War in the Ukraine can be seen in the same way.
