Palestinian-American Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has trounced her right-wing opponent in the Michigan 12th congressional district election to win a fourth term as the only Palestinian-American woman in the US Congress. Tlaib won 69.4% of the vote, almost three times the tally of Republican Richard Hooper in second.
Tlaib’s victory stands in stark contrast to the loss of Democrat vice-president and presidential candidate Kamala Harris, whose refusal to do anything but support Israel’s genocide and her apparent campaign assumption that she could replace the votes of those disgusted by her complicity by appealing to ‘soft’ Republican voters was punished at the ballot box. Harris and the Democrat leadership have only themselves to blame for Trump’s come-back – and Tlaib’s stunning victory rubs their faces in their own mess.
Tlaib has been a prominent critic of the Israel’s genocide and has called for the US to end arms shipments to the occupation, which the Establishment has attempted to punish with censure in Congress and attempts to oust her.
Tlaib, who refused to endorse Harris in the presidential contest, was also targeted by pro-Israel smear campaigns. Last June, Michigan attorney general Dana Nessel accused Tlaib of antisemitism, claiming Tlaib had said Nessel was targeting pro-Palestinian protesters at the University of Michigan because Nessel is Jewish. She had not said anything of the sort.
Tlaib was also a vocal critic of Trump during his first presidential term and has been a consistent opponent of US collusion in Israel’s crimes against Palestinians.

Respect for Ttaib, she was the only elected Democrat that refused to endorse Kamala Harris for President. The other members of the squad backed down and endorsed Harris.
Something every Spaniard of my generation learned by heart is the meme that “Rome doesn’t pay traitors”
If , Pressley, Omar and Ocasio-Cortez believe that by endorsing Harris they aren’t going to be targeted for deselection, I am afraid they are very much mistaken.
Labour MP Tan Dhesi, chair of the defence committee, congratulated Trump on his election win, adding: “The US is – and will remain – the UK’s closest ally, particularly when it comes to military co-operation and defence.
“NATO, of which the US and the UK are founding members, is the greatest military alliance the world has ever seen and is integral to global peace and security. Its strength is our strength. The UK will doubtless continue to advocate for a closer, stronger NATO.
“The question of how the UK will modernise its defence capabilities, improve its readiness, and provide a credible conventional deterrence in the response to the growing threat posed by Russia and other actors seeking to destabilise the rules-based international order will – without a doubt – feature prominently in the Defence Committee’s work in coming month.”
Dhesi was almost defeated by an Independent last time, let us hope that he is next time.
