Pro-Palestinian media particularly targeted
Today, 16 September, German police in Berlin blocked journalists working for international media from accessing a pro-Israel rally to report on the comments and attitudes of those demonstrating in support of Israel’s genocide in Gaza. German media companies were allowed access. restricted the press work of foreign media. Reporters from stations or publications with a Pro-Palestinian editorial position were particularly targeted, according to eyewitnesses:
According to the journalists involved, they were prevented from conducting interviews getting close to film the event and also from a pre-booked interview with a Green party politician. Police claimed the ban was for safety, but declined to provide any legal or practical justification for it.
Another officer is then filmed allegedly assaulting a journalist before screaming in the faces of outraged anti-genocide protesters:
The restrictions are another manifestation of Germany’s targeting of supporters of Palestinian human rights and freedom, while the regime promotes the apartheid, settler-colonial political ideology of Zionism and treats anti-genocide protesters with brutality, and raise serious questions about journalistic freedom and general freedom of speech and transparency in Germany. The repression reflects similar clamp-downs in the UK and France, where journalists and activists are being criminalised.
The German state is explicitly Zionist and is one of Israel’s largest military suppliers after the US. The regime says its support for Israel is a duty after the genocide of Jews in Nazi Germany – the Nazis also targeted Gypsies, LGBT people, the disabled and other groups of course – a posture that has led to Germany supporting the genocide, racially-based torture and oppression of Palestinians and other war crimes that have already killed as many as 200,000 civilians, mostly women and children, and have maimed and brutalised many more.
