Hezbollah strike ‘killed 22, wounded 74 Israeli Unit 8200 spies’

Arab channel says European security sources confirmed casualties

Hezbollah’s retaliatory strike last month killed 22 operatives at the Israeli ‘Unit 8200’ spy base and wounded 74, according to reporting from Arab news channel Al Mayadeen. The channel, based in Lebanon and described by its opponents as sympathetic to Hezbollah, said that the information was confirmed to its journalists by European security sources.

Israel has claimed that it shot down most of the missiles involved in the Lebanese group’s attack, which Hezbollah said it carried out in retaliation for the assassination of one of its commanders in an Israeli airstrike.

Unit 8200 is the IDF’s ‘cyber-spy’ unit. Whistleblowers from the unit have said that members sometimes wear ‘X’s on their headsets to mark assassinations their information has facilitated – and that it targeted Palestinians for extortion and blackmail to further the Israeli government’s aims.

UK PM Keir Starmer employed – and is believed to still employ – a member of the unit to monitor members’ social media activity. The Israeli head of Unit 8200 resigned on Thursday, reportedly over the failure to prevent the 7 October Hamas attack.
