Bangladesh PM resigns amid resistance and flees country in helicopter

Sheikh Hasina and her sister flee as brutal state violence fails to put down huge protest movement against injustice and cronyism

Sheikh Hasina has resigned her position as prime minister of Bangladesh and fled the country, according to Bangladeshi media. The 76yo Hasina is said to have taken a helicopter with her sister to a “safe haven” outside Bangladesh.

Hundreds of people have been killed and thousands wounded in the government’s attempt to put down the protest movement that has become a general uprising after starting as a student protest over cronyism and the exclusion of ordinary people from better-paid government jobs.

The brutal state repression has involved the murder of protesters, public desecration of victims’ bodies and the closure of universities and colleges.

Update: after initially heading to India, Sheikh Hasina is now believed to be on her way to London. Wonder whether Keir ‘deport Bangladeshis’ Starmer will apply his policy to her…?
