Israel assassinated Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh using an explosive device smuggled into Iran weeks ago, according to US media reports that cited both Middle East and US officials. Haniyeh was saying in a guesthouse he had used more than once before.
The bomb was detonated on Wednesday, after Haniyeh had returned to his room after attending an Iranian presidential event. Both the Iranian government and Hamas have have said they will take revenge on Israel. The US claims Israel only briefed it after the assassination was completed. According to Reuters, Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Houthis, and Iraqi groups met in Iran today to discuss their response to Israel’s actions.
Thousands attended a funeral procession held today for Haniyeh by the Iranian government. His body will be interred on Friday near his home in Qatar.
