Greens win Highgate by-election in Starmer’s constituency in landslide

Lorna Jane Russell takes seat with 59% of vote

The Greens’ Lorna Jane Russell has hammered Labour in Keir Starmer’s back yard, taking the Highgate by-election with a huge 59% of the vote.

Green party deputy leader Zack Polanski, who had earlier said he thought the contest was going to be close between the Greens and Labour, tweeted just now:

Unsurprisingly, Starmer has not mentioned the result in his social media.

  1. Good result for the Greens, council election wins helps to alleviate the wasted vote argument.

    1. No surprise as the ward faced a by-election as leading Green Sian Berry stood down from that ward to stand for the Greens in another election.

But it’s also no surprise to see the Green vote holding up handsomely in or near Starmer’s constituency, as the Greens have been much better re a Gaza ceasefire than the craven Zionist cowardice of Starmer’s Labour.

  2. Although its a good result for the Greens It’s not as dramatic as perhaps as its been presented here. The Greens have held one of the three seats in the Ward since 2002 and the bye election arose because of the resignation of the (then) incumbent Green Councillor. Basically the Greens have held on to their seat albeit with an increased majority of 59% compared to 51% in Mat 2022. I suspect that the turn out yesterday was probably lower than in May 2022 . I don’t know what it was but I wouldn’t expect that there was a big turn out for a single seat Council bye election in November. Sadly Starmer doesn’t appear to be in line for the Ramsey MacDonald treatment just yet.

    1. Yes Albert Swift, the greens merely held (not win) one seat on the council BUT it’s the increased majority (for the greens) that should worry Labour. Of course, the Labour press machine will try to disregard the entire story and the MSM will largely support it.

  3. Not arsed about turnouts or time of year/election cycle, Alberto.

The smarmerists have been kept out on their own patch, and the way things are going the incumbents will be out on their arses, too.

    More, please.

  4. A very very small piece of good news.
Anything that sticks it up Starmer’s nose is good news.

I don’t have so much time for the Greens.
They are on something of a fortunate band-wagon with “green” issues.
Are they anything better than a one-trick pony ?
They appear to have little political analysis that could tackle the major crises of poverty, distribution of wealth and power, endemic corruption and international conflict.
It’s good that they are calling for a cease-fire in Gaza.
    My God ! — That shouldn’t be difficult !
But how far are they willing to go in advocating for solutions for the causes of the conflict ?

  5. They are always uberhaters of true socialism. It’s in their dna. That list of questions exposes them. How will they change pay for a humane society.

  6. A completely off-topic rant…

These people who put up OTT Christmas light displays to match Blackpool illuminations…

Yes, they give SOME people a lot of pleasure.

BUT…..Christmas is the worst time of year for as many. There are millions across the uk who can barely afford to light their living rooms, let alone light up a Christmas tree.

How about, instead of the colossal (and let’s face it, vainglorious) waste of electricity, these people reduce the size of displays by 50% or so, and donate the saved electricity costs to their local foodbanks so that (for example) struggling families with their own children who cant afford to run their own light display on a Christmas tree can, at least, keep their homes a bit warmer for a bit longer.

I really don’t get why the local TV news stations go around giving these peacocks the publicity they crave. It ISN’T public-spirited festive cheer.

    It’s nothing more than self-indulgence.

    Rant over.

    1. Toffee
They are spending their own time and money to cheer the rest of us up, I’m also a sucker for the fireworks at New Year’s, worse than the bairns, always end of crying at the glory of the display
When I die I’m going to the Cheltenham Festival in the sky with fireworks wt the end of each day’s racing, Valhalla for Geordies
All the best to you and yours and all on here

  7. On another matter, Jimmy Dore reports that some of the marches against AS had to resort to paying people to attend, going rate $250
They also report that the hundreds 9f cars destroyed by the IDF at the Music Festival are to be broken up and buried
It’s worth getting the picture of the scale of destruction
Gets rid of the evidence of Israels slaughter of their own people on the 7th October

  8. Geordie Galloway and Chris Williamson front and centre, with JC as President of the GB Workers party should walk the London Mayorality
