Dolores O’Riordan of the Cranberries died today. I didn’t know a great deal about her, but some of the music she wrote was the instantly memorable background to life at the time.
A friend of mine who is very familiar with events in Northern Ireland at the time just told me that her track ‘Zombie’ was ‘instrumental in creating the atmosphere for the PIRA ceasefire’ [of 1994].
That seems as fitting a tribute as any imaginable to a great woman and one that I haven’t yet heard mentioned in the coverage of her death. Here’s one of many tweets with that haunting track, so you can hear it for yourself:
Dolores O'Riordan was responsible for writing Zombie. The visual effects of the music video, her naturally blessed voice, to the heartfelt lyrics was truly amazing, she'll be missed 💔. pic.twitter.com/aRcQfXifdu
