Last weekend, the Pizza Hut Delivery (PHD) chain advertised, on Facebook, an offer for free pizza for customers for customers who show a voucher from the S*n.
So great was the outrage among prospective clients that the chain then issued a ‘grovelling’ apology for the offence caused – but the promotion will still run until Thursday.
In most places, that is.
However, PHD outlets on Merseyside, where the S*n is hated because of its smears against the victims of the Hillsborough disaster, have chosen not to accept the vouchers after representations from campaign groups Stop Funding Hate and Total Eclipse of the S*n.
PHD franchises in Tuebrook, Knotty Ash, St Helens and Moreton have announced that they will refuse S*n vouchers – but instead, they will provide pizzas at half price to customers who quote ‘You’ll never walk alone‘ with their order:
Sky News has tried to arrange interviews with both Stop Funding Hate and Total Eclipse – and both groups have declined, with a Total Eclipse spokesperson telling the SKWAWKBOX that the focus is on “getting people to boycott the rag”.
While the S*n promotion will last until 7 December, the Merseyside ‘YNWA’ promotion will run until the 15th.
The recent decision by the Paperchase chain to withdraw advertising from the Daily Mail after widespread protests against its decision to pay a publication considered by many to promote hate was criticised by supporters of the billionaire-owned ‘newspaper’ – but widely welcomed elsewhere. The same is likely to be true of the PHD apology and the franchisees decision to reject the vouchers and offer their own special deal.
Campaigners are trying to reach the remaining franchisees in the area to discuss them also joining the boycott and alternative promotion – and are hoping that franchises outside Merseyside will also join in.
