As the SKWAWKBOX reported on Friday, Birmingham City Council (BCC) has agreed a ‘new’ deal – in reality a version of the old one that BCC reneged on, unnecessarily prolonging the strike – with striking refuse workers and their unions. The council’s bad faith wasted over £6 million.
The deal represents a ‘total climbdown’ by BCC, but was agreed by the council’s Cabinet on Friday. Workers gave their approval to the deal on Saturday morning and the Birmingham Mail is reporting that the strike – which lasted 222 days – is over.
However, this is not – quite – yet the case.
Unite insiders tell the SKWAWKBOX that the union will be in court tomorrow for a court order to set the seal on the deal and make it binding and irrevocable:
Even though it’s now been approved by both sides, we can’t trust this lot without a court order!
Assuming everything goes to plan in court tomorrow – then the strike will officially be over.

Headline in yesterday’s middle class house rag the Observer/Guardian “Birmingham bin workers agree to call off five-month dispute.” From that and reading the article that followed you got zero sense a) that this was a major victory for working class solidarity and b) that not only had the council been well in the wrong but they’d wasted millions of ratepayers’ money. Thank you for the way you at least have covered this dispute.
