Pidcock: I STILL won’t be pals with Tory MPs – and they’re afraid of us on soc med

North-west Durham Labour MP Laura Pidcock knows a thing or two about the influence of social media. After an interview with the SKWAWKBOX in which she rocked the cosy Establishment by stating her intention not to socialise with any Tory MPs because of the damage they are doing to her constituents, Ms Pidcock was the news for weeks during the summer, as the Tories in Parliament and the media set up straw men to attack her over in an attempt to defend the status quo.

Media interest is still high, though this time in a more positive way as Owen Jones interviewed her – tongue in cheek! – about sending Tory MPs to the gulags and about why the Establishment is so shaken by the effectiveness of Labour’s social media activists.

In the first short clip, which was tweeted by the excellent I was a JSA claimant account on Twitter but which we’ve uploaded here with subtitles, Ms Pidcock says why she thinks the Tories can’t do social media activism – and takes a justified if guilty pleasure in the abject failure of their attempt:

In the second, which Ms P tweeted herself, she shares Jones’ amusement over his question whether she would send Tory MPs to the gulag – a dig as the deliberate, straw-man over-reaction of the Establishment media – but becomes deadly serious as they discuss the dire impact of Tory policies on the people in her constituency:

The Tories may be terrified of Labour’s social media activists, but they’re no less afraid of some of Labour MPs who refuse to be drawn into the cosy Westminster club – and it’s easy to see why.

  1. this second clip of Laura Pidcock’s took me to tears ,,,I want to share it as a single item on FB , I don’t do twitter ,,, but how do I do it ??

    1. Little more tricky, as the video isn’t linked on YouTube, for example. However, if you copy the link to the tweet and paste it into a FB status it should – hopefully – display as a linked article with a preview for people to click. Otherwise, you’d need to save the video to your device and then upload it in FB

  2. Laura is absolutely correct in her stance. At the moment, our country is confronted with a series of threats, all of which derive from the past forty years of mainly Tory or Tory-inspired policy ( Don’t forget Mrs Thatcher’s “greatest achievement”). The idea that, in the cosy club of Westminster, political opponents can waive their differences for the sake of being ” chums” is both ludicrous, and an insult to the victims of Thatcherism and it’s offspring. That covers all of us at some point in our lives.

  4. Toryism fails at social media activism because its truths are poison and its spin, framing and lies disintegrate in an environment with an open right to reply.

  5. Absolute treasure of a lady. So wonderful to have such women in the Labour Party. Laura has them all sitting up. She’s always on the ball and so articulate. Let’s just trust her and encourage her. Tories have no one of her calibre among their dipsticks. IMO we need to get on twitter send our best wishes to our wonderful MPs. Apart from those, of course, who constantly sniping from the sidelines. We need to tell them to get their act together and fight FOR the Party not against it. I have told several Labour MPs to “grow up” and be professional.

Labour has had a magnificent conference leaving Tories lurking in doldrums. Now we must ensure that Corbyn gets into No. 10. Tories will crumble as there is nothing left for them. If DUP pull out then Tories are doomed.

Come on folks get behind our fantastic MPs.

  6. I would have your back, Laura.
    If I could!
I like your attitude your upright convictions about not having any Tory Parliamentarian as a buddy!
    Stick at it, Laura!

  7. It’s hard not to use clichés about MP Laura Pidcock: National treasure is just one.
    Keep on keeping on, Laura!

  8. My local Labour MP is good friends with our neighbouring Tory constiuency MP to my dismay.
Laura has surely rattled a lot consciousness in the party, it’s time they demonstrated their loyalty to their constiuents who are being brutalised by virulent, dying Tory party.
