Serious HMP #LongLartin riot – no mention on BBC News channel?

longlartin

Around four hours ago, the press started to report a ‘serious disturbance’ at Long Lartin prison in Worcestershire. The incident received a mention on the Hereford and Worcester section of the BBC News website, less than an hour ago as of the time of writing, but appears – at least from a scan of the last two hours of broadcast – not to have received a mention on the BBC News channel.

Last night’s News at Ten programme is not yet available on BBC iPlayer, in spite of a message saying it would be available ‘shortly after broadcast’, so it’s possible there was a mention – but a ‘disturbance’ involving eighty inmates that has forced prison guards to retreat from an entire wing of a high-security prison that houses terrorist prisoners, caused specialist ‘tornado teams’ to be brought in to try to quell it – and is apparently still ongoing – would feature prominently in rolling news coverage.

Or so you’d think.

Why isn’t it? There has been something of a phenomenon recently of items many would consider important receiving a discreet mention on the BBC News website but being omitted from TV coverage. Is the BBC doing the minimum it needs to in order to claim it is fulfilling its purpose but keeping some items out of sight for those who watch its broadcasts?
