Remember when Corbyn was mocked for floating women-only carriages?

In 2015, as the Labour leadership race entered its final stages, Jeremy Corbyn was vilified and mocked for floating the idea of women-only train carriages. It was never more than an idea, but an Establishment desperate to prevent his surge in the contest seemed to decide that it was the most ridiculous notion ever.

The BBC has reported that the number of sexual offences against women on trains has more than doubled in the past five years:

This grim statistic shows Corbyn once again on the right side of an issue – showing foresight, insight and the courage to raise issues others duck or simply ridicule.

Of course, for women-only carriages to work, just like any aspect of in-train safety, requires guards on trains – so of course the Tories are pushing in the other direction.

  1. In Japan it has been on running that women only carriage of trains. It seems working quite well. If some men women’s carriage is obviously very strange and warning sign for assault. Yes, Corbyn is very aware of many things and has common sense. It is always surprise me that many people do not have common sense especially in politics and people in power.

  2. But..but…but…There’ll be CCTV in the carriages….

Which means people will have to endure assaults of all kinds for longer and THEN they’ll go after the ‘perp’ rather than having a guard to interrupt/prevent (Or at least help interrupt/prevent) at an earlier opportunity, as well as being an actual ‘on the spot’ witness.

And that’s just one of a myriad of scenarios.

CCTV doesn’t prevent crime; and I very much doubt it lowers/deters it, neither.

And then there’s the possibility of an unscrupulous CCTV controller releasing footage on social media, or selling footage to the scum, or other such rag…

  3. I’m not entirely sure that the rise in sexual offences on trains “shows Corbyn once again on the right side of an issue” (suggesting women only carriages) without knowing, for example, what proportion of the rise is on London Underground (where over 50% of the total offences seem to be committed).

I don’t think that anyone would suggest trying to segregate the sexes there, and a “guard” wouldn’t be able to move through the train anyway.

(The linked BBC piece contains the following:

“Research on the London Underground last year showed that the majority of these offences happen during rush hour, dispelling the myth that this is anything to do with a late-night drinking culture.”

  4. Segregation is never the solution. No men short lists are the same in my opinion. No offence. Where’s the CCTV evidence? What happened to the offenders? If station staff and guards are non existent. A future driverless dystopian dream is dark indeed. Privilege is all.

  5. J C, RIGHT AGAIN!
THIS SORT OF THING WENT ON WHEN I WAS A YOUNG MAN IN THE CARRIAGES PULLED BY STEAM.
WHEN THE DEISEL TRAINS WERE INTRODUCED IT MAINLY BECAME NONE EXISTANT.
IT’S ONLY IN THE LAST 25/30 YEARS TILL NOW BECOME AN EPIDEMIC, BECAUSE PERVERTS HAVE NOW NO FEAR OF BEING CAUGHT!
ANYONE WHO THINKS DIFFERENTLY DOES’NT TRAVEL BY TRAIN ON A DAILY BASIS!

  6. Enforce better the ban on men carrying weapons. At the same time school women in their use and encourage them to carry weapons.
I believe they’re unlikely to abuse the privilege but punish the few who do as now.
Assaults on women will stop when men can no longer assume them to be defenceless.
