Labour ‘urgently investigating’ PPC racism allegations

The Labour Party is ‘urgently investigating’ allegations that one of its parliamentary candiates is behind a Twitter account said to have made racist comments.

Cabbies’ chief Trevor Merralls, the candidate for Old Bexley and Sidcup, has categorically denied any involvment in the @wellingblueboy Twitter account.

However, the account did previously feature what appears to be a picture of Mr Merralls as a profile picture and was previously mentioned as his account by both a Labour MEP and a union organiser, following an appearance by Mr Merralls at a 2016 Blue Labour event:

Tweets by the cabbies’ group he now runs also suggest that they attributed the account to Merralls.

The SKWAWKBOX can exclusively reveal that the matter was passed to the party’s Compliance Unit after a series of urgent texts and calls among senior party figures late last night.

The ‘wellingblueboy’ account appears to have been deleted from Twitter after it was publicly linked to Mr Merralls. A Labour spokesperson said that if the allegations were found to be true, Mr Merralls would immediately be removed as a Labour candidate and would face ‘the strongest disciplinary action’.

It is to Labour’s credit that the party is acting immediately and decisively to deal with this issue.

Attempts by the SKWAWKBOX to reach Mr Merralls for comment have so far been unsuccessful.
