A short time ago the SKWAWKBOX reported that Gerard Coyne’s suspension as regional organiser for Unite was said to be connected to the union’s investigation into his campaign’s use of Labour Party member data, which he has admitted and which would constitute a major breach of the DPA (Data Protection Act) if the Labour members have not given permission for their information to be used.
At the time it was unclear what impact the suspension would have on his candidacy in Unite’s General Secretary election.
The SKWAWKBOX can exclusively reveal that Unite officials are considering his exclusion from the contest – if, of course, the union’s investigation finds that he is guilty of misconduct.
Some senior Labour officials, however, are fuming at the timing of the leak of the information concerning Coyne’s suspension, which they think may have been done deliberately to try to distract public and media attention from Jeremy Corbyn’s stellar campaign launch this morning.
If that is the case, the tactic appears to have failed so far, as the mainstream news outlets are still talking overwhelmingly about Corbyn’s superb insurgent campaign speech.
