Liverpool Mayor: NO pay cuts to balance books

ja

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson has issued a firm promise regarding the incomes of the city’s employees.

At a meeting of one Liverpool’s Constituency Labour Parties (CLP) last night, Anderson was asked directly by a member:

You’ll have heard of what’s being done by Durham County Council – a Labour council – in cutting the pay of teaching assistants by up to 25%, including sacking and re-engaging them to force through the pay cut. Can we have your promise that you won’t do anything of that sort here?

Mayor Anderson confirmed that he was aware of the situation in Durham before answering,

We’re facing a serious situation here in Liverpool. In the last 6 years, our income from central government has been cut by 58%, more than anyone else in the country, and we’re being forced by the Tory government to find another £90m in cuts. There’s no way to do that without all of us suffering and we’re even looking at a referendum of the city’s residents to get their approval for a significant increase in council tax to protect essential services.

But no, there will be no pay cuts to our employees. We’re a Labour city.

A firm statement that The SKWAWKBOX trusts will be honoured.
