So much for choice: schools FORCED to become academies

The Tories love to talk about ‘choice’ – in the NHS, in public services – and in education. This never adds up to better options for ordinary people, but it’s a useful justification, one that fools some people.

You might or might not know about ‘choice’ in education. Michael Gove’s pet ‘academies’ project is premised on allowing schools the ‘choice’ to opt out of the state mainstream and become independent organisations.

What you probably don’t know is that the Tories are so keen on schools making this choice (probably as a step toward them becoming profit-making institutions) that they are prepared to force schools to become academies  even if teachers, governors and parents all want them to stay as they are.
