Selection meeting for Gapes replacement cancelled again by Labour amid complaints re delegate eligibility

Panel selection meeting cancelled day before due by Labour’s GLU

A meeting to select a panel to oversee the selection of Labour’s candidate to replace quitter MP Mike Gapes in Ilford South constituency has been cancelled for a second time at short notice.

Locals insisted that the first meeting was cancelled because of complaints around the eligibility of the delegates who would decide the panel, amid fears that left-wing applicants for the candidacy would be excluded.

Local election boundary changes have not been reflected in the branch delegates attending constituency meeting, meaning that some delegates are believed to be ineligible because they live in different wards or even outside the new constituency boundaries. Left-wingers believe the old structures have been maintained to deny them the opportunity to have a say.

In spite of the complaints, London Labour insisted that the first meeting was cancelled only because of the EU elections. However, with the elections past rumours have been circulating that the rearranged meeting was also going to be cancelled.

With just one day to go before the meeting was due to take place today, a formal cancellation notice went out – stating that the party’s Governance and Legal Unit (GLU) was behind the decision:

Selections decided on the basis of false boundaries and invalid delegations would, of course, be subject to legal challenge.

Left-winger Sam Tarry is understood to be among the left-wing applicants, with local council leader Jas Athwal thought to be among the likely centrists.

  1. Sam Tarry knows how to defend against vexatious claims of AS,
if I remember rightly on Sky he called them out as ridiculous and listed everything JC has been accused of and asked what next

  2. The Murial !
That caused lazy cockwombles so much grief, apparently boils down to depiction of Jewish Bankers,
now I have a piece of paper that tells me im fairly well educated and I cannot pick out which Wankers are meant to be Jewish
can someone tell me what im missing

  3. Whoever finally replaces Gapes surely cannot be worse, then again Ilford is full of nightmare surprises, just look Streeting.

    1. Mike ‘The Gammon’ Gapes would make a great wrestler. Do they have an over 60s category?

  4. I saw a suggestion somewhere earlier today that since most Tinge MPs had left and since they have a habit of changing their name, much in the manner of Facebook status updates, perhaps they should now be called Soubry-Gapes, which my dyslexics dictionary informs me is roughly the opposite of Schadenfreude. Personally I prefer FCUK OFF.

  5. Sam Tarry would be a fantastic asset to us as an MP. Sam is a clever and principled socialist, a good communicator and as tough as old boots.
If he doesn’t get selected for Ilford South he needn’t worry. In addition to the quitters seats there are likely to be around 20 PPC vacancies following the deselection of Labour in Name Only MPs who never should have been selected to represent us in the first place.
