Right-wing Welsh Euro selection includes candidate who said she is only “just” Labour

Right-wing slate selected by Welsh Labour includes Labour First-backed candidate whose social media profile said she was only ‘just’ in Labour

Mary Wimbury is a failed candidate for Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) who was backed by the right-wing Labour First and Progress groups.

Wimbury was among a batch of candidates listed this week by Labour for the Welsh elections for the European Parliament next month – yet before her selection her Twitter profile claimed that she was only barely even in the party:

Prominent Welsh Labour members have told the SKWAWKBOX that all the listed candidates – below any incumbents who wish to contest the election – are on the right of the party:

Jackie Jones
Matthew Dorrance
Mary Wimbury
Mark Whitcutt

Ms Wimbury – who attempted to identify herself with party leader Jeremy Corbyn during the NEC elections – was keen to distance herself from the UK party on Thursday:

But the ‘United Left Wales’ group of Unite shop stewards had already indicated that it would not support her candidacy:

One leading Welsh Labour member described the response of Welsh members to the list of candidates announced:

We’re all feeling sick.

SKWAWKBOX comment:

The scale of the task facing Welsh Labour leader Mark Drakeford to bring his party’s established structures into line with the wishes of Welsh Labour’s mass membership who elected him was clearly demonstrated in this week’s selections.

  1. She also failed to win in elections to become an AM and an MP. Failing to become an MEP will complete the set.

Welsh Labour, having only just got a left-wing leader, is about 3 years behind UK Labour. Things will change, but it’s going to take time.

  2. There’s only one possible response to someone self-defining as “only just” Labour.
The only question is how far off she should fuck.

  3. The European elections are becoming a text book example on losing political momentum.
Polls show Farage’s party leading because by choosing candidates making up their policy as they go (Adonis is a manifesto in himself) Labour has given the chance of winning the election away.
It would have been better for Labour not to contest these elections than to set themselves up for defeat.

  4. Hailing from Torfaen, one things for sure, this bloody woman won’t get my vote, our incumbent MEP most certainly will though.
