As has been known in certain circles for well over a year, during the EU referendum campaign in 2016 the UK’s security services had serious concerns about the sources of then-UKIP donor Arron Banks’ funding for the referendum campaign – and as Home Secretary Theresa May intervened to block their investigation.
Banks has now been referred to police by the Electoral Commission for an investigation into alleged criminal matters surrounding funding from non-UK sources in the campaign.
As Labour MP Ben Bradshaw put it, she has serious questions to answer. Bradshaw has now written to May to ask whether,
she or any other Minister or senior official has at any stage declined a request from any of our security, intelligence or law enforcement agencies to investigate Banks.
He’d be well advised not to hold his breath waiting for a meaningful answer – but the truth will out.
Banks has denied any wrongdoing.
