Labour MP Chuka Umunna has faced criticism since a Leeds University student tweeted an ad, circulated by the university, for an unpaid intern to work in his London office. Umunna justified the ad by pointing to the policies of IPSA, the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority.
But that hasn’t let him escape an elegant – and not personal – reprimand from his party leader.
Former Corbyn aide Matt Zarb-Cousin has tweeted Umunna’s ad alongside an extract from a briefing note sent today by the Labour leader’s office to all MPs with a gentle reminder of party policy:
Whatever your opinion on the ad and the principle of unpaid internships, the ensuing thread is hilarious. Here are a few examples:

Imagine being a 'Labour' MP and thinking this was OK. There's a clue in the name somewhere. 🤔

Advertised in a quite flagrant contravention of party policy. Smith was sacked from the shadow cabinet for similar, and woodcock referred to the NEC and the whip removed
So what can we expect to happen to umunna? He’s been sailing close to the wind for a blood long time…
“Chuka Umunna, right” is a bit of a boring caption.
How about, “I WISH he wasn’t out of my league”
Your turn 🙂
My turn?
Ok
F**K OFF UMUNNA. GO ON, GET TAE FOOK, AND TAKE THAT SQUARE-HEADED, MAX HEADROOM LOOKALIKE WITH YA.
I win 🙂
Jeremy Corbyn is right,, there is no need for any MP to take on an unpaid Intern.
The characters from The Ragged Trousered Philanthapists are coming alive – Chuka ‘Sweater’ Umama.
The Blairites chucked him in, chuck him out!
Let’s not forget this either. You could just easily imagine a Conservative MP saying it:
