The latest NHS England performance statistics show that the number of ‘elective’, ie. non-emergency, operations cancelled in our health service in the third quarter (Oct-Dec) of the year reached the highest third-quarter level for at least twenty-four years:
This number – 22,013 – does not include the more than 50,000 procedures cancelled because of the government’s decision to abandon all non-emergency operations to try to cope with the record ‘winter crisis’ in Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments. These will fall into the fourth quarter.
The blanket cancellation measure failed, as A&E performance worsened again in January – in spite of a fall in attendances.
In response to the collapse that the statistics reveal, the government decided to stop measuring.
In the last complete year on record, zero percent of key NHS England performance targets was achieved.
