Sinister ‘Unite’ email to conference venue

As the SKWAWKBOX covered earlier, Unite’s ‘West Midlands Political Conference’ takes place at the West Brom football ground tomorrow. Former challenger for the union’s leadership, Gerard Coyne, has claimed that he and others were not ‘allowed in’ to the conference – an allegation vigorously refuted by Unite’s acting regional secretary Howard Beckett.

Events took a somewhat sinister turn this week with the arrival of an email, from the Unite email address of a former union employee to the conference venue, demanding details and the location of the room booked for the conference.

Suspecting that something was amiss, as a bona fide organiser would know the details demanded, venue staff responded asking for further information – only to receive an immediate auto-response advising that the email was no longer in use as the recipient was no longer with the union, followed soon after by a human response to the questions in the email.

It appears that a former employee – or someone else using their credentials – has logged into a Unite email account that they are no longer entitled to use, in an attempt to obtain details about the nature and location of the exact venue to be used for the conference – a worrying development even if it is not known why or for whom that person was seeking the information.
