May’s lie to Queen to cling to power should spark constitutional crisis

In June, the SKWAWKBOX published government documents and legal analysis by constitutional law experts showing that Theresa May ran out of time, according to constitutional law experts, in her attempts to do a deal with the DUP that would allow her to claim ‘the confidence of the House’, ask to form a government and pass a Queen’s Speech.

Last weekend’s Sunday Times ran a front-page story describing Buckingham Palace sources’ ‘exasperation’ that Theresa May ‘misled’ the Queen by claiming that she had done a deal with the DUP, when in fact it took her another seventeen days to do so:

The key parts – blurred but legible – show that this ‘misleading’ was not the only unprecedented aspect of the post-General Election events. May also delayed the Queen’s Speech to gain time for her negotiations, the first time this had ever happened:

May also angered the Queen by telling her, after the DUP deal was eventually concluded, that she had formed a government, instead of following convention and asking permission to form one.

By constitutional precedent, May’s inability to form a government in a timely fashion should have led to the Queen offering Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn an immediate opportunity to do so. Instead, May ‘misled’ the Queen, moved the Queen’s Speech and eventually reached a deal with the DUP.

To form a government that, as 21st Century Wire has observed, had no constitutional validity and unlawfully deprived Corbyn of his legal opportunity to do so:

As the Wire summarises:

So let’s sum up: a Buckingham Palace source alleges that Theresa May lied to the Queen about her ability to form a government. This meant Jeremy Corbyn was not given the opportunity to form one. Continuing delays caused in the Queen’s Speech to be delayed resulting in a ceremony which did not follow the rules – do we have a legitimate Parliament even? Finally, a bribe to a political party which Teresa May is now beholden to, potentially destabilising a political situation already destabilised by the charade of Brexit.

The Wire even uses the ‘T-word’ – ‘treason’.

At the very least, May’s behaviour should have resulted in an ongoing and explosive constitutional crisis, with the whole media estate questioning the legitimacy of the government.

That this did not happen – and shows no sign of happening, even after the Sunday Times‘ article – speaks loudly about the Establishment and its willingness to keep us in ignorance for its own ends.

  1. Hey Skwarkbox,

First cannonball from the Tower to ensure the sinking of H.M The Tess’ May. Quite frankly it is about time. The Tatty Tory Fleet are poisoning everyone reputations and belittling the constitutional worth of actually having a Monarch: a Monarch who needs to be a Queen when her public needs her to get it on and lead this country to Corbyn!

May I leave this timeless classic?

~ The Times They Are A Changing ~ Written By Bob Dylan ~

    Come gather ’round people
    Wherever you roam
    And admit that the waters
    Around you have grown
    And accept it that soon
You’ll be drenched to the bone.
    If your time to you
    Is worth savin’
    Then you better start swimmin’
Or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’.
    ~
    Come senators, congressmen
    Please heed the call
    Don’t stand in the doorway
    Don’t block up the hall
    For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
    There’s a battle outside
    And it is ragin’.
    It’ll soon shake your windows
    And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin’.
    ~
    Come mothers and fathers
    Throughout the land
    And don’t criticize
    What you can’t understand
    Your sons and your daughters
    Are beyond your command
    Your old road is
    Rapidly agin’.
Please get out of the new one
If you can’t lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin’.
    ~*~
    God Bless. Namaste 🙂

  2. IT WON’T BE LONG NOW!
AS TIME MOVES ON, MAY GETS MORE UNFIT FOR OFFICE!
HANGING BY HER FINGERTIPS, IF THEY NEED SOMEONE TO GIVE HER A VERY GENTLE PUSH!
40 THOUSAND KILLED IN THE RUSH!

  3. Scary times for the Tories – having even a few of their lies and crimes exposed here shows they can no longer rely on their friends in the MSM to sweep them under the carpet.
When lying & spinning to grab or keep political power is allowed to go unpunished – and I mean punished by imprisonment – democracy is damaged.
The electorate requires the truth to decide wisely. That principle must have primacy over any presumed right to privacy.
The Freedom of Information Act has been of limited help.
Access to information now needs to be free and immediate if democracy is to serve the electorate and not the power seekers.

  4. Kick them all out if they are allowed to get away with this what else are they capable of doing.

  5. If Nick Robinson or [insert lamestream roll call here] want to know why they’re all hurtling towards their own journalistic Cassandra Crossing, they need only be honest with themselves about exactly why they wouldn’t touch a story like this, or it’s staggering implications, with a ten foot cattle prod.

Or not until it had been so widely reported by real journalists that not mentioning it would give the game away. I believe this is what’s meant by the word ‘professionalism’ among MSM careerists.

What Laura K. means by the word ‘impartiality’ I cannot fathom.

  6. A think it’s aboutique time theses tories were put out of office as you cannot believe a word out of any the cabinets mouth and when a party leaders lies to our Queen they should be made resign office immediately

  7. I wish you’d put a SHARE button on the bottom of your articles, so they could be quickly punted onto social media such as Facebook.

    1. At the end of the article under Share This: There are buttons for Twitter and Facebook (and a ‘like’ button).

  8. Reblogged this on The Night Owl and commented:
I truly hope that one of the Powers That Be will start to wake up, and do something about this!
The fact that we are living with an unconstitutional parliament should surely wake them up, and start acting in a more Democratic way?
    But pardon me!
I fell asleep for a minute there, and thought we did actually live in a democracy!
    Silly me!

  9. How can the Tories be negotiating Brexit while they clearly aren’t a legitimate government? Any arrangements they make can arguably be undone in court. Do the EU negotiators understand this aspect, I wonder?

  10. If this is the case, and I hope it is, then why is the Labour Party itself, who employ lawyers and legal staff, not up in arms about this, and creating the biggest possible fuss at every available turn? I’ve never seen Corbyn bring May to task about it in PMQs, and I never heard a word said about it at conference. So what’s going on?
