Microsoft’s email system down 8 hours and counting

Edit: this is the latest update just posted by Microsoft as of 16.30hrs BST:

Current status: We’ve identified that a subset of infrastructure was unable to process requests as expected, which caused general service availability to drop unexpectedly. We’ve redirected requests to alternate infrastructure to restore service, and we’re monitoring the environment while connectivity recovers. Additionally, we’re investigating an issue in which users are unable to send email messages.
Start time: Monday, September 18, 2017, at 7:20 AM UTC
Next update by: Monday, September 18, 2017, at 4:30 PM UTC

Looks like at least some users will continue to have problems for a while yet.

If you use Hotmail, Outlook or an outlook.com-based online email service and think you’ve sent an email today, best check your drafts folder.

According to a service status on Microsoft’s ‘Office 365 Service Health’ site, the service has been unable to send or receive emails since around 8.20am British Summer Time this morning:

ms service health.png

Attempts to send an email will result in the email being stored in the ‘Drafts’ folder, initially with the header message:

ms draft msg1

which switches after a few minutes to:

ms draft msg

Microsoft has not yet posted an estimated time on its service page for the fault to be corrected, so it may take a while yet. If you have something urgent to send, you’ll need to use an alternative email.

  1. You’re right – just checked and an email “sent” this morning is there in my draft folder. But, how did I receive the email from skwawkbox?

  2. Inbox is working but 25 sent mails are sitting in ‘drafts’ with no means of resending them! It won’t even allow me to edit/rewrite and send, so I assume they’ve ‘gone’ but been pinged back by MickeyMouseMicrosoft. I wondered why I’d had no replies to them! Thanks, skwawkbox for the ‘head sup’!

  3. Still sending outward-bound mails into drafts.

Mine was working alright at 10:30 this morning as well :/

    1. After checking again – it seems the 10:33 email I ‘sent’ went into drafts, too.

My last one out was 08:54. Pull yer bloody fingers out, microsoft.

  4. Seems to be working normally now – I’ve had replies to the emails I sent out last night, anyway.
