Terror in Charlottesville

Earlier this month, desperate Tories, their media glove-puppets and a few Labour right-wingers tried to make hay out of the situation in Venezuela by demanding Jeremy Corbyn condemn the Maduro government – when, as a SKWAWKBOX interview with journalists who have just returned from Venezuela showed, the reality in Venezuela is far different from what is being presented and the vast majority of violence and shortages stem directly from a right-wing opposition that has even set several people on fire for supporting the president.

Yesterday in the US town of Charlottesville, white supremacists attacked anti-racism protesters – and then a car was driven at high speed into a crowd of peacefully-protesting people, killing three. One of the protesters caught the incident on his smartphone – warning, the footage is shocking:

So far, there has not been a word from Theresa May on the matter – yet with their usual hypocrisy, the Establishment media have drawn no attention to this in their coverage – even though US senators have been quoted correctly calling it terrorism.

There is no functional difference between the attack in Charlottesville and the terrorist incidents involving vehicles on Westminster and London bridges or in Paris – yet Theresa May has not even offered words of sympathy to the US from a country that has experienced similar horrors.

But media demands for her statement are curiously absent.

Donald Trump condemned ‘violence from many sides’ but completely failed to condemn the nazis’ white-supremacist views.

Tory apologists have tried to excuse May’s invisibility and failure to speak out – on the grounds that she’s busy:

may busy

One well-known right-wing commentator even shamed himself by getting into the gutter to try to deflect attention from May’s dereliction of duty by comparing Trump’s comment to that of Jeremy Corbyn on Venezuela:

montgomerie trump

The difference is that in Venezuela there has been violence on both sides – police officers have been arrested and charged for excessive violence against protesters. In Charlottesville, anti-racism protesters were peaceful, at worst a few defending themselves when attacked.

By contrast, Trump condoned nazism with his weasel words, afraid of offending his ‘base’ – and May has kept completely silent, afraid of offending Trump.

Few would doubt that this craven lack of action or comment by what passes for the UK’s Prime Minister has its roots in Tory terror of losing the straw a US trade deal that the government is desperately clinging to in the midst of their the Tories’ utter incompetence on Brexit.

But no excuse can lessen the shame of the fact that Theresa May is silent when an actual leader would be, well, leading instead of hiding.

  1. I’m glad you linked the two events – I was thinking same. Well done. Very clear. Maybe we should suggest a coup on the USA as they clearly aren’t managing? The country obviously needs outside ‘help’? 🙂

  2. IT’S TO BE EXPECTED, MAY DID THE VERY SAME OVER THE HORROR OF THE GRENFELL TOWER FIRE, ARRIVING MUCH MUCH LATER, UNANNOUNCED TO THOSE EFFECTED!
    HER SILENCE IS DEAFENING!
    ANOTHER NAIL IN HER COFFIN!
