So, back to ‘clickbait’: ConHome editor tries to school SKWAWKBOX reader. Fails

There was an amusing exchange this afternoon between a SKWAWKBOX reader and Mark Wallace, Executive Editor of Conservative Home.

Mr Wallace had accused the SKWAWKBOX of being ‘clickbait’ and, after this blog responded by pointing out that there is no advertising on this site and therefore no click-driven revenue, which is a defining characteristic of ‘clickbait’ sites, reader @Cornish_Damo tweeted this to Wallace to point out his error.

Mr Wallace’s reaction was to fight rather than admit he was off the mark:

LMAO – you genuinely don’t know what clickbait is, do you?

You can almost hear his eyes rolling. Let’s see what various sources say ‘clickbait’ is:

Wikipedia

Clickbait is a pejorative term describing web content that is aimed at generating online advertising revenue, especially at the expense of quality or accuracy

And so on. You get the picture. Unfortunately, Mr Wallace clearly doesn’t.

Of course the point of every article on this blog is to be read. But the SKWAWKBOX ‘goes the extra mile’ to be the opposite of clickbait – paying WordPress for a premium package to eliminate even WordPress ads from SKWAWKBOX pages to maximise readability.

Something that Conservative Home can’t claim.

The SKWAWKBOX offers uncluttered information, free of charge, and relies entirely on the generosity of its readers to donate as they see fit. Getting the word out is everything. Though of course, the occasional opportunity to poke gentle fun is also welcome.

Never mind. It’s one more facet of recent attempts to undermine the SKWAWKBOX and, as someone memorably put it on Twitter this afternoon:

if you’re taking flak, it means you’re over the target.

The SKWAWKBOX is provided free of charge but depends on the generosity of its readers to be viable. 1. Tories will spin themselves into the ground before admitting the truth, they firmly believe that Goebbels philosophy that if you tell a big enough lie and keep repeating it people will believe it.

What they can’t see is that this is the 21st century, and at the click of a button you can prove they are lying.
