Memoirs of a benefits scrounger: woman sanctioned for getting a job

Fascinating and frustrating real-life, first-hand account of the insanity of the Jobseeker system – someone who’d found a job told they couldn’t sign off benefits because they were going to be sanctioned for – well, for various things – and then a series of questions so meaningless they must be satire. Except they aren’t. Please read!

  1. Unbelievable stupidity but unfortunately ’twas ever thus. I remember the two times I could have signed on in 2002 and again in 2009, both times in the end it was too much trouble to bother and I gave up in the end.

  2. This is beyond bureaucracy. The system is not fit for purpose and I sincerely hope that the Select Committee gets to see this and countless more examples of similar madness.

  3. He should send the script to that new programme on TV Job Lot.

I wish it wasn’t true, but it is.

He will get a nice computerized letter when he does eventually sign off, which will claim the Jobcentre has supported him into work!

  4. Agree this wd make a hugely successful tv sitcom or stage comedy, others should send in their ‘experiences’ too (real or fictional, parodying the uselessness of this govt) and perhaps get ‘slutocrat(?)’ to turn ithem into scripts for a weekly TV series
